Where these numbers come from
The range is measured. It is the middle half of what dealers are currently asking for that item, in that condition, across the listings I track. It is not an estimate and it is not smoothed: if there is not enough on the market to measure, the answer is that I cannot say, and I would rather say that than invent a figure.
The private-sale and trade-in figures are different, and I label them as such wherever they appear. I track what shops ask, not what private sales actually fetch, so those two are a stated assumption applied to the measured range rather than anything I have counted. Treat them as a rule of thumb, not as data.
