Leica M11 Monochrom
The Leica M11 Monochrom is a digital M-mount rangefinder camera introduced by Leica Camera AG in 2023. It is part of the M11 generation and continues Leica’s dedicated black-and-white digital M line after the original CCD-based M Monochrom, the M Monochrom Typ 246 and the M10 Monochrom [1].
The camera is built around a dedicated monochrome BSI CMOS sensor with a 35mm full-frame format and a native resolution of 9528 × 6328 pixels, or 60.3 megapixels. Leica specifies that the sensor uses a pixel pitch of 3.76 µm and has no low-pass filter. Unlike a color digital camera, the M11 Monochrom does not use a color filter array, so it records luminance information directly rather than producing black-and-white files from color data [1].
A major technical feature of the M11 Monochrom is Leica’s Triple Resolution Technology. The camera can record DNG or JPEG files at approximately 60MP, 36MP or 18MP, while still using the entire sensor surface. This gives photographers a choice between maximum resolution, smaller files and more flexible storage management without changing the field of view [1].
The camera uses the Leica M bayonet mount with an additional sensor for 6-bit lens coding. The optical finder is a large bright-line rangefinder with automatic parallax compensation and 0.73x magnification. It displays paired framelines for 28/90mm, 35/135mm and 50/75mm lenses, automatically selected when a compatible lens is mounted [1].
Mechanically, the M11 Monochrom uses an electronically controlled focal-plane shutter and also offers an electronic shutter function. Leica lists mechanical shutter speeds from 60 minutes to 1/4000 second, and electronic shutter speeds from 60 seconds to 1/16000 second. Flash synchronization is available up to 1/180 second via the ISO accessory shoe with additional control contacts for Leica flash units [1].
History
Development and Launch
The Leica M11 Monochrom was introduced in 2023 as the fourth generation of Leica M cameras dedicated completely to black-and-white photography. Leica positioned it as a minimalist, high-resolution monochrome rangefinder for photographers who work exclusively with light, shadow and tone rather than color [2].
Production Evolution
The M11 Monochrom belongs to the M11 digital rangefinder family. Compared with the M10 Monochrom, it moves to the newer M11 platform, adds a 60MP monochrome BSI CMOS sensor, expands the ISO range to 125 to 200,000, introduces 256GB internal memory, and uses USB-C connectivity for charging and data transfer [1][2].
Model Position and Image Character
Within the Monochrom line, the M11 Monochrom is significant because it combines Leica’s highest-resolution monochrome M sensor with the handling philosophy of the M11 generation. The absence of a color filter array means the camera cannot capture color files, but it allows direct black-and-white image capture with high detail, broad tonal separation and strong low-light capability [1][2].
Special Variants
The standard production model is identified as Type No. 2416. Leica lists order numbers 20208 for EU, US and CN markets, 20209 for Japan, and 20210 for the rest of world markets [1]. Finish or regional packaging differences should be stored as variant or metadata fields, while the main LeicaLensList model name should remain M11 Monochrom.
Collector Notes
For collectors and database purposes, the M11 Monochrom should be kept separate from earlier Monochrom generations. The original M Monochrom 10760 is a CCD-based M9-generation camera, the M Monochrom Typ 246 is based on the M Typ 240 platform, and the M10 Monochrom is based on the M10 body with a 40MP monochrome CMOS sensor. The M11 Monochrom is the later M11-generation model with a 60.3MP monochrome BSI CMOS sensor, 256GB internal memory and USB-C workflow [1][2].
The body is visually minimalist, with no red Leica logo and a dark optical viewfinder coating. Leica lists a full-metal magnesium and aluminum housing with leatherette covering, sapphire glass rear display and black finish. For LeicaLensList, color or finish differences should be stored in metadata rather than added to the main model name unless a factory special edition is being catalogued separately [1][2].
The Leica M11 Monochrom is important because it represents the most technically advanced version of Leica’s monochrome-only rangefinder concept to date. It combines traditional optical M rangefinder operation with modern high-resolution direct monochrome capture, internal storage, USB-C connectivity and the streamlined M11 body architecture.
