Leica M11
The Leica M11 represents the most significant structural and technological redesign of the digital M camera since the M8. Released in January 2022, it combines classic rangefinder mechanics with cutting-edge connectivity and sensor technology. At its core is a 60-megapixel Back-Side Illuminated (BSI) CMOS sensor. This sensor features a unique "Triple Resolution" technology, allowing photographers to shoot Raw DNG files at 60MP, 36MP, or 18MP using the full sensor area. Lower resolutions are not cropped; instead, pixel binning is used to increase dynamic range (up to 15 stops) and reduce noise.
The most debated change in the M11 is the elimination of the traditional removable baseplate, a feature present on every M camera since 1954. Instead, the M11 adopts a direct-insertion battery system (similar to the Leica Q2 and SL2), where the battery release lever is integrated into the battery itself. This change allows for faster battery swaps and provides access to the SD card slot and a USB-C port without removing a plate. The USB-C port enables charging and direct tethering to iPhones and iPads (Apple MFi certified).
Visually, the M11 retains the iconic silhouette but introduces material differences between finishes. The Black finish features a top plate made of high-quality aluminum, making it approximately 110g lighter than the Silver Chrome version, which retains the classic heavy brass top plate. The camera also introduces a new electronic shutter capable of speeds up to 1/16,000s, allowing for the use of wide-open apertures like f/0.95 in bright daylight without ND filters.
History
The M11 was developed to modernize the M-System for a mobile-first workflow while pushing image quality to medium-format levels.
A New Architecture (2022) Launched in 2022, the M11 broke several long-standing traditions. Beyond the baseplate removal, it fundamentally changed how the camera measures light. Previous M cameras measured light off the shutter curtain blades. The M11 measures light directly from the sensor (always-on metering), ensuring perfect exposure accuracy even with difficult lighting. This architectural change also enabled the "Live View stabilization" feature in the digital viewfinder, making focusing with the screen smoother [1].
Variations The M11 platform quickly expanded to include specialized models:
- Leica M11 Monochrom (2023): A dedicated black-and-white version with the 60MP sensor and 256GB of internal storage [2].
- Leica M11-P (2023): The world's first camera with "Content Credentials" (CAI) built-in, verifying the authenticity of images at the hardware level. It also removed the red dot logo and increased internal storage to 256GB [3].
- Leica M11-D (2024): A screen-less version of the M11, removing the rear LCD for a pure analog experience but retaining the ISO dial [4].
Legacy The M11 is currently the flagship of the rangefinder world. It is praised for its massive resolution, which allows for aggressive cropping, effectively turning a 28mm lens into a 35mm or 50mm lens via digital zoom without significant loss of quality.
