The Kodak Ektar 47mm f/2 is a fast American standard lens made for the Kardon rangefinder. This profile covers the original interchangeable Leica thread-mount version, not Ektar optics later removed from fixed-lens Kodak or Retina cameras and adapted by third parties.

Optical Qualities

The Ektar uses six elements in four groups in an asymmetrical Double Gauss arrangement. Its slightly shorter-than-normal 47mm focal length gives a natural perspective with a modestly wider field than a 50mm lens. The f/2 aperture supports available-light photography and selective focus. Results from surviving lenses can vary with coating and optical condition.

History

Premier Instrument Corporation developed the Kardon as an American Leica-style rangefinder during the Second World War and produced military and civilian versions after the war. The camera was supplied with a Kodak Ektar 47mm f/2 in an interchangeable screw mount. Auction documentation records civilian Kardon examples with this lens from 1945.

Handling

The original Kardon lens focuses from approximately 3.5 feet, or 1.07 metres, to infinity. Its focusing mount is mechanically coupled to the camera rangefinder. The chrome metal construction and compact standard-lens proportions match the practical design of the Kardon camera system.

Compatibility

The factory Kardon version uses the Leica thread mount, also known as LTM or M39, and is rangefinder coupled. It can be used on compatible screw-mount rangefinders and on Leica M cameras with a suitable adapter. Adapted Retina or other fixed-camera Ektars are not necessarily calibrated to the same mount standard.
