The Honor 50mm f/2 is a standard lens associated with the Honor S1 Type II rangefinder of the late 1950s. Documented camera sets and specialist references establish it as an Honor-branded Leica thread mount lens intended for coupled rangefinder use, not as a later conversion or an unrelated 39mm SLR optic.

A specialist specification record lists six elements in four groups and a minimum focusing distance of 3.5 feet, approximately 1.07 metres. Reliable documentation has not been located for the diaphragm-blade count, filter system, dimensions or weight. Those details should remain unknown rather than being inferred from the Honor 50mm f/1.9, a Konica Hexanon or another Japanese normal lens.

The rigid metal barrel carries the Honor identity and manual focusing and aperture controls. On compatible Leica-thread cameras it uses the mechanical rangefinder system. A suitable 50mm LTM-to-M adapter permits use on Leica M bodies, provided the lens, adapter and camera are correctly calibrated.

Dependable performance information for the exact Honor 50mm f/2 is limited. The reported six-element, four-group construction places it among the more complex standard lenses offered with late-1950s Japanese rangefinders, but an element count alone does not prove a particular rendering style or named optical derivation.

Sharpness

No controlled version-specific test cited here establishes its sharpness across the frame or through the aperture range. Results from a Konica or another Honor standard lens should not be transferred without proof that the optical cells are identical.

Contrast and flare resistance

Published evidence does not establish a repeatable contrast or flare profile. Coating condition, internal haze, cleaning marks and previous servicing can materially change the results of an individual surviving lens.

Digital use

The lens can be adapted to a mirrorless camera for direct sensor focusing and optical evaluation. That use does not confirm the accuracy of its mechanical rangefinder coupling. Claims based on one adapted sample should remain sample-specific.

History

Development and Launch

Pacific Rim Camera dates the Honor S1 Type II to 1957 and lists the Honor 50mm f/2 among its normal-lens options, alongside the Honor 50mm f/1.9 and Konica Hexanon 50mm f/1.9. Leitz Photographica Auction has documented period Honor S1 Type II sets containing both the Honor 50mm f/2 and the W. Honor 35mm f/3.5, confirming the f/2 lens’s place in the camera system.

The wider company history remains incomplete. Specialist research traces the camera design from Dai-ichi Optical and Mejiro Optical, with period manufacturer references shifting toward Zuiho around 1958. The profile therefore follows the established Zuiho catalogue identity while acknowledging that the exact production responsibility is not fully documented.

Production Evolution

No reliable evidence establishes multiple optical or mechanical generations of the Honor 50mm f/2. Differences between photographed examples should not be promoted to separate versions unless a period catalogue or other authoritative record demonstrates a production change.

Pacific Rim Camera reports that the Honor-branded normal lenses have sometimes been attributed to Konica, but explicitly presents this as speculation. The Honor 50mm f/2 should therefore not inherit Konica specifications or be merged with a Hexanon profile without stronger evidence.

Special Editions/Variants

No separate factory special edition has been reliably documented. A lens supplied in a matched camera set represents original system context, not a distinct edition of the optical model.

Collector Notes

Identification should rely on the complete Honor 2/50mm engraving, the rigid barrel and the coupled Leica-thread mount. The lens should not be confused with the Honor 50mm f/1.9 or with Konica-branded normal lenses supplied on some Honor cameras.

For practical use, inspect the focusing cam, infinity setting, aperture action and optical cell. Accessories or a period camera body can add context, but they do not prove a unique optical variant or establish undocumented specifications.
