The Honor 50mm f/1.9 is a fast standard lens supplied with late-1950s Honor rangefinder cameras. Specialist camera references list it for both the Honor S1 Type II and the later Honor SL, while an institutional auction record confirms the Honor-branded f/1.9 lens with the SL. It uses Leica thread mount registration and mechanical rangefinder coupling.

A specialist specification record lists a minimum focusing distance of approximately 3.5 feet, or 1.07 metres, and a 43mm filter thread. A dependable factory source has not been located for the element-and-group formula, diaphragm-blade count, overall dimensions or weight. These values should remain unknown rather than being copied from the Konica Hexanon 50mm f/1.9 that was also supplied with Honor cameras.

The lens has a rigid metal barrel with manual aperture and focusing controls. It mounts directly on compatible LTM or L39 rangefinder bodies and can be used on Leica M cameras through a suitable 50mm LTM-to-M adapter. Accurate coupled focus requires the complete lens, adapter and camera system to be correctly adjusted.

Performance results from the Konica Hexanon 50mm f/1.9 should not be assigned to this lens unless documentary evidence proves that the optical constructions are identical. The possible production connection described by collector references remains an attribution, not a verified optical specification.

Contrast and flare resistance

No period measurement or controlled modern comparison cited here defines the lens’s contrast or flare resistance. Present-day results may be strongly affected by haze, surface wear, coating deterioration or earlier repair.

Digital use

Mirrorless adaptation allows direct sensor focusing and can help evaluate an individual sample. It does not test the rangefinder cam, and results from one lens should not be generalized to the entire production.

Development and Launch

Pacific Rim Camera records the Honor S1 Type II as appearing in 1957 and lists the Honor 50mm f/1.9 among its standard-lens choices. The Honor SL followed in 1959 and was also offered with the Honor 50mm f/1.9. Christie's has catalogued an Honor SL with the matching Zuiho Honor f/1.9 50mm lens, independently confirming the camera-and-lens association.

The corporate sequence is less certain. Research on the Honor camera line traces the design through Dai-ichi Optical and Mejiro Optical, with manufacturer references changing to Zuiho around 1958. The lens is catalogued under Zuiho because that identity is documented on later Honor equipment, while the exact optical subcontractor remains unresolved.

Production Evolution

No authoritative source has established separate optical generations of the Honor 50mm f/1.9. Its use on both the S1 Type II and SL establishes continuity across two camera models, not necessarily a redesign.

Pacific Rim Camera considers Konica manufacture probable, but does not cite factory documentation. Because Honor cameras were also sold with a separately branded Konica Hexanon 50mm f/1.9, visual and historical association alone cannot justify transferring the Hexanon’s optical formula to the Honor lens.

Special Editions/Variants

No factory special edition or independently documented optical variant has been established. Differences in condition, accessory sets or camera pairing do not create separate lens editions.

Collector Notes

The complete Honor 1:1.9 f=50mm and Zuiho Optical markings are central to identification. Buyers should distinguish it from the Honor 50mm f/2 and the Konica Hexanon 50mm f/1.9, both of which occur in the same camera-system history.

Check the rangefinder cam, helicoid, aperture movement and glass condition. A camera-and-lens set provides useful period context, but should not be used to infer an undocumented formula or a unique production variant.
