KMZ Jupiter-3 50mm f/1.5 (Contax RF)

The KMZ Jupiter-3 50mm f/1.5 (Contax RF) is the early Soviet fast normal lens made for Contax and Kiev rangefinder cameras. Its seven-element, three-group optical construction descends from the Zeiss Sonnar 50mm f/1.5.

The Contax/Kiev version is an internal-bayonet optical unit. It has no independent focusing helicoid, focus ring or distance scale. Focusing is performed by the helicoid built into the camera body, which moves the complete lens and simultaneously operates the camera's rangefinder mechanism.

This body-driven construction is the material mechanical difference from the M39 Jupiter-3. The M39 version contains its own helicoid and rangefinder cam, while the Contax RF lens relies completely on a compatible camera or adapter with an internal-bayonet focusing mechanism.

The lens has a continuously adjustable f/1.5 to f/22 diaphragm with thirteen blades, a 40.5mm accessory thread and single-layer coating. Published specifications give a 1m focusing limit for the bayonet version.


Optical qualities

Rendering

At f/1.5 the Jupiter-3 produces the lower contrast, gentle transitions and residual glow associated with fast Sonnar-type lenses. The shallow depth of field makes accurate body and rangefinder calibration important.

Sharpness

Central detail is usable at maximum aperture but accompanied by reduced contrast and softer outer areas. Stopping down to f/2 or f/2.8 produces a substantial improvement in central sharpness and contrast.

Bokeh and transitions

The thirteen-blade diaphragm keeps the opening close to circular when stopped down. Background rendering is often smooth, although bright or complicated backgrounds can show outlining.

Flare resistance

The single-layer coating provides less flare resistance than later multicoated optics. Haze, cleaning marks and internal contamination can further reduce contrast.


History

Development and Launch

The Jupiter-3 lineage began with post-war Soviet production based on the Zeiss Sonnar. Early lenses carried ZK markings before the Jupiter-3 name was adopted around 1950.

Production Evolution

KMZ manufactured the regular Jupiter-3 through 1956. The optical formula was recalculated for Soviet glass in 1954, with revised production beginning in 1955. Production subsequently transferred to ZOMZ, followed much later by the Valdai Jupiter factory.

Special Editions and Variants
