About this lens
Arsenal Jupiter-8M 53mm f/2
The Arsenal Jupiter-8M 53mm f/2 is a Soviet standard lens for Kiev rangefinder cameras using the Contax-pattern internal bayonet. The compact optical unit has no independent focusing helicoid. Focusing is performed by the camera body, which moves the lens through the internal bayonet mechanism and simultaneously operates the coupled rangefinder.
The Jupiter-8M differs mechanically from earlier Jupiter-8 versions through its click-stopped aperture ring. Its nine-blade iris runs from f/2 to f/22. Engravings marked 2/50 and 2/53 should remain in one profile. They represent labeling and barrel changes rather than separate optical designs. The measured focal length is approximately 52.5mm, explaining both designations.
Optical qualities
Rendering
The six-element, three-group Sonnar-derived construction produces strong central definition with moderate contrast at full aperture. Wide-open images can show glow, reduced edge definition and sensitivity to flare. Contrast and field consistency improve noticeably between f/2.8 and f/5.6.
The slightly longer effective focal length gives a modestly tighter field of view than a true 50mm lens.
History
Development and Launch
Arsenal introduced the Jupiter-8M during the later development of the Kiev rangefinder system. It became a common standard lens for several Kiev models.
Production Evolution
The designation changed from 2/50 to 2/53 on later production without a corresponding optical redesign. Minor cosmetic and mechanical revisions also occurred.
Special Editions and Variants
Late barrel variations and export-market engravings belong to this profile.
Collector Notes
Check aperture clicks, oil on the iris and accurate body-driven focusing. Calibration can vary when the lens is used on an original Zeiss Contax body.
