About this lens
Arsenal Helios-94 50mm f/1.8
The Arsenal Helios-94 50mm f/1.8 is a rare fast standard lens produced for the Kiev-5 rangefinder. It uses a six-element, four-group optical construction and a dedicated external-bayonet focusing barrel.
The lens has its own helicoid, a coupled rangefinder mechanism and a nine-blade click-stopped aperture. Minimum focusing distance is approximately 0.9 metres. Its mechanical interface is specific to the Kiev-5 and should not be treated as interchangeable with the external bayonet of earlier Contax and Kiev cameras.
Optical qualities
Rendering
The Helios-94 is a double-Gauss standard lens rather than a direct continuation of the three-group Jupiter-8 Sonnar formula. It offers relatively strong central resolution and contrast at f/1.8, with softer peripheral definition and visible vignetting at full aperture.
Stopping down improves field consistency. The nine-blade iris maintains a comparatively rounded opening through much of the aperture range.
History
Development and Launch
Arsenal introduced the Helios-94 near the end of the 1960s as a faster and optically distinct standard lens for the Kiev-5.
Production Evolution
Production was limited and lasted only a few years. No major optical redesign is known.
Special Editions and Variants
Minor engraving and finish differences should remain within one profile.
Collector Notes
The Kiev-5-specific mount is the most important identification feature. Check the helicoid, rangefinder transfer mechanism and iris before purchase.
