Leica Noctilux-M 50mm f/1 Type 3

The Leica Noctilux-M 50mm f/1 Type 3 is the third mechanical version of the Walter Mandler-designed f/1 Noctilux. It retains the seven-element, six-group spherical optical formula, E60 filter thread and one-metre minimum focusing distance of Type 2, but uses a revised clamp-on lens hood system [1] [2].

Type 3 is principally identified by the Leica 12544 E60 hood and serial numbers beginning around 3220709 [3]. Like Types 1 and 2, it uses product code 11821. Leica Camera Classic identifies documented E60 examples as the third f/1 version [2].

The lens should remain separate from Type 2 even though the optics, product code and basic dimensions are shared. The practical database distinction is the hood attachment, barrel details and serial range.

Optical qualities

Rendering

Type 3 preserves the established Noctilux-M f/1 rendering. At maximum aperture it provides strong subject separation, smooth tonal transitions and a distinctive combination of central definition and softer peripheral rendering.

The slightly later production period may involve coating differences between individual examples, but no separate optical formula is documented. Rendering differences should therefore not be attributed automatically to the version number.

Sharpness

The lens was engineered for practical use at f/1. Leica described the design as offering even resolution and dimensional detail reproduction at maximum aperture [1].

Accurate focusing remains critical. The one-metre minimum focusing distance and very shallow depth of field place substantial demands on both rangefinder calibration and photographer technique.

Contrast and color

Contrast is moderate to strong in the central image when the optics are clean. Colours tend to retain natural transitions rather than the more abrupt microcontrast associated with modern aspherical designs.

A correct hood remains important because haze, coating wear and internal reflections can noticeably lower contrast.

Bokeh and transitions

At close and medium distances, the f/1 aperture provides pronounced foreground and background separation. Transitions can appear soft and gradual, while point highlights may show stronger outlining or shape changes as the lens is stopped down.

Distortion and vignetting

Vignetting is visible at f/1 and decreases progressively at smaller apertures. Geometric distortion is generally less visually significant than focus placement and field curvature.

Handling

Type 3 uses an E60 filter thread and the clamp-on Leica 12544 hood. The revised hood system is its most important physical distinction from Type 2.

The lens focuses from one metre to infinity and uses half-stop aperture settings. At approximately 580g, it remains large and front-heavy compared with standard Leica 50mm lenses.

Digital use

Type 3 was supplied without factory six-bit coding. Product code 11821 was later approved by Leica for coding retrofit [4]. Retrofitted examples remain Type 3 lenses and should not be treated as a separate model.

History

Development and Launch

The Noctilux-M 50mm f/1 family was introduced in the 1970s as a fully spherical successor to the earlier f/1.2 aspherical Noctilux. Walter Mandler achieved the f/1 aperture through high-refractive-index glass and a seven-element, six-group design [1].

Type 3 followed Type 2 around the early 1980s. Leica Classic documents a 1988 example as the third version with E60 fitting and product code 11821 [2].

Production Evolution

Collector documentation places the Type 3 transition at serial number 3220709. The new barrel uses the clamp-on 12544 hood, replacing the earlier 12539 hood of Type 2 [3].

The Type 3 remained within the 11821 production family until Leica introduced product code 11822 in the 1990s. Leica’s own coding list records 11821 production through 1994 [4].

Special Editions/Variants

No dedicated Type 3 commemorative edition is confirmed.

Collector-relevant differences include Leitz Canada and Leica engraving, serial-number ranges, focusing-scale variations and later six-bit coding added during servicing.

Collector Notes

The most reliable identification points are serial number, hood attachment and front-barrel design. Product code 11821 alone cannot separate Types 1, 2 and 3.

The original 12544 hood adds value and helps confirm the correct version. Replacement or third-party hoods should not be used as the only identification evidence.
