Carl Zeiss Tessar 50mm f/3.5 Macro
The Carl Zeiss Tessar 50mm f/3.5 Macro is a dedicated focusing head made for the Zeiss Ikon Contaprox I close-up and reproduction system. It is mechanically different from the regular rigid Contax Tessar and therefore requires a separate profile.
The assembly contains a four-element, three-group Tessar lens and its own helical focusing mechanism. The factory specified a focusing range from approximately nine inches, or 0.23 metres, to infinity before additional extension tubes were installed.
The focusing head does not couple to the Contax rangefinder. Critical focusing is instead performed on the Contaprox ground-glass adapter using a five-power magnifier. After focusing, the ground-glass assembly can be exchanged for the Contax camera body through the system's standard bayonet interface.
Although the head can be incorporated into broader bellows and reflex accessory configurations, its primary factory application is Contaprox I. It must not be confused with the separate Panflex Tessar 115mm f/3.5.
Optical qualities
Rendering
The lens retains the clear, high-resolution character associated with the classic Tessar formula. Its primary purpose is technical close-up, copying and reproduction work rather than general handheld rangefinder photography.
Close-up performance
The supplied 1x extension tube allows approximately 1.1:1 magnification. Optional 2x and 4x extension tubes increase the reproduction ratio further. Period factory documentation specifies magnifications of approximately 2x and 4.1x with those individual tubes, or up to approximately 6.1x when all three are combined.
Sharpness
Stopping down increases depth of field and improves consistency across a flat subject. Apertures around f/5.6 to f/11 are generally more practical for reproduction than f/3.5, although diffraction becomes progressively relevant at the smallest settings.
Optical identity
No separate optical formula has been established for the West German macro head. Its independent profile is justified by its dedicated helicoid, non-coupled operation, ground-glass workflow and extension-tube compatibility rather than by a proven optical recalculation.
History
Development and Launch
A Contaprox Tessar focusing head was introduced in Jena in 1947. By approximately 1950, optical production for the West German version had transferred to Oberkochen and examples appeared with Zeiss-Opton markings. Later heads carry Carl Zeiss branding.

Production Evolution
The focusing head was catalogued as 563/04 during the 1950s and later as 11.1814. It remained available in the Zeiss Ikon Contax catalogue in 1960.
Special Editions and Variants
Known variations include metric and feet focusing scales, Zeiss-Opton and Carl Zeiss engravings and differences in the supplied accessory set. These do not require separate optical profiles.
Collector Notes
A complete Contaprox I outfit normally includes the Tessar focusing head, ground-glass adapter, focusing magnifier and 1x extension tube. These components are frequently separated, so completeness materially affects usability and collector value.
Check the helicoid, exposure-correction scale, diaphragm, ground glass, magnifier and bayonet interfaces. The absence of rangefinder coupling is intentional and not a defect.
