Optical Qualities

This compact 35mm wide-angle has a modest f/4.5 maximum aperture. Exact optical construction data for the Leica-thread version is not sufficiently consistent across surviving references, so it remains unspecified.

History

The post-war Orthostigmat was offered in Leica M39 form, with surviving examples documented in the early 1950s. Many carry the VL coating mark, and some were additionally engraved for the Tower market.

Handling

Its very small barrel and paired focusing tabs make it a distinctive period wide-angle. An accessory 35mm finder is useful on bodies without the corresponding built-in frame.

Compatibility

Auction documentation confirms an original coupled M39 mount. The lens therefore works on LTM rangefinder bodies and on Leica M cameras with a suitable thread-to-bayonet adapter.
