Kristall

Kristall was an Italian camera and lens make associated with Domenico Chinaglia of Belluno. It is best known for small-production 35mm rangefinder cameras inspired by early Leica designs and fitted with Leica-compatible screw mounts. For collectors of vintage cameras and LTM lenses, the make is represented by models such as the Kristall 2a and by compact standard lenses including the collapsible Krinar Anastigmat 50mm f/3.5. Kristall did not establish a documented native Leica M-mount lens program, although compatible LTM lenses can be used on many M-mount cameras with the appropriate adapter.

History

Founding / Early Years

Domenico Chinaglia began producing Kristall cameras in Belluno around 1949. The first products appeared during a period when several Italian workshops were developing domestic alternatives to German 35mm rangefinder cameras. Early Kristall cameras followed the basic proportions and handling conventions of the Leica II, including a focal-plane shutter and interchangeable lenses in Leica screw mount. Guido Nomini of Milan is identified in specialist histories as an early distributor.

Market Entry

Kristall entered the market with compact Leica-style rangefinder and scale-focus cameras. The Kristall 2a, 2s, 3s, and Standard variants illustrate the gradual addition of features such as rangefinder focusing and flash synchronization. The collapsible Krinar Anastigmat 50mm f/3.5 served as a standard lens on some bodies. Surviving auction examples describe it as rangefinder-coupled and built in an Elmar-like retractable form.

Expansion / Modern Period

Production remained limited, and Kristall never developed into a large international camera manufacturer. Later products included the Kristall R and Kristall 53. Specialist accounts connect Chinaglia with the later acquisition of AFIOM equipment or assets, but the surviving record does not establish a complete corporate chronology. Kristall camera production ended during the postwar consolidation of the Italian photography-equipment industry. Today the name survives primarily through collectible cameras and lenses.
