About this lens

Schneider-Kreuznach Xenon 50mm f/1.5 (Rigid)

This Schneider-branded Xenon 50mm f/1.5 is an exceptionally rare fast normal lens in an original rigid, rangefinder-coupled Leica thread mount. Its special black-and-chrome barrel is mechanically distinct from the familiar collapsible Leitz Xenon.

Optical qualities

Rendering

The f/1.5 Xenon belongs to Schneider’s seven-element, five-group double-Gauss design family. Wide-open images can show lower contrast, flare sensitivity and gentle edge definition, while stopping down improves clarity. Coating and internal condition strongly influence the performance of surviving lenses.

Handling

The rigid barrel remains extended at all times and focuses through the camera’s rangefinder coupling. Reliable figures for minimum focus, filter size, dimensions and blade count have not been established for this Schneider-barrel version, so those fields remain blank.

History

Development and Launch

A documented production batch of Schneider-branded 50mm lenses was issued in 1947 in original coupled Leica M39 mounts. This post-war execution follows the earlier Schneider-developed Xenon optical lineage but uses its own rigid barrel identity.

Production Evolution

The Schneider-branded rigid lens should not be merged with the collapsible Leitz Xenon profile. Later examples and auction descriptions show small finish and engraving differences without proving a revised optical formula.

Special Editions/Variants

Black paint and black-and-chrome descriptions occur in surviving records. They are treated here as finish variation within the same rigid model rather than separate optical versions.

Collector Notes

The Schneider name ring, rigid barrel and native coupled LTM mount are key identification features. Because the production was very limited, later conversions or incomplete lens heads require careful distinction from original examples.
