About this lens
Nippon-Kogaku Nikkor-Q.C 50mm f/3.5 (Collapsible)
This profile covers the collapsible Leica screw-mount Nikkor-Q.C 50mm f/3.5, a compact coupled standard lens from Nippon Kogaku's first postwar rangefinder program.
Optical qualities
Rendering
The four-element, three-group formula is a classic compact standard-lens design. Clean examples can provide crisp central detail and restrained rendering, while flare, edge contrast and color are strongly influenced by the condition of the early coating.
Handling
The barrel retracts for transport and must be fully extended and locked before use. Focusing is rangefinder coupled, and the small controls reflect its compact collapsible construction.
History
Development and Launch
Nikon records that production of the NIKKOR-Q.C 5cm f/3.5 in Leica screw mount was recommended in December 1945. It became one of the foundational lenses of Nippon Kogaku's postwar 35mm system.
Production Evolution
The collapsible lens passed through several barrel and engraving updates. Later coupled examples retain the same core identity and are grouped here rather than split by minor production details.
Special Editions/Variants
This profile is limited to collapsible factory LTM examples. The mechanically distinct rigid close-focus version has its own entry.
Collector Notes
Check that the tube extends and locks securely, that the rangefinder cam follows focus correctly and that the aperture and helicoid move smoothly. Haze and coating wear are common condition concerns.
