Carl Zeiss Biogon 21mm f/4.5

The Carl Zeiss Biogon 21mm f/4.5 is a landmark super-wide-angle lens introduced for the Contax rangefinder system in 1954. Its eight-element, five-group construction provides a field of view of approximately 90 degrees while maintaining the low geometric distortion associated with the symmetrical Biogon family.

The lens uses the Contax external bayonet and contains its own focusing helicoid. Focusing is coupled to the camera rangefinder down to approximately 0.9 metres. Because a standard Contax viewfinder does not show the full 21mm field, a dedicated 21mm accessory finder or compatible turret finder is required for accurate composition.

Its deeply recessed rear optical assembly is fundamental to the design. The rear element extends far into the camera body, so the lens should be mounted and stored carefully and used only on bodies or adapters providing suitable internal clearance.


Optical qualities

Rendering

The Biogon produces an expansive but comparatively natural wide-angle perspective. Straight lines remain notably well controlled when the camera is held level, making the lens particularly suitable for architecture, interiors and environmental photography.

Sharpness

Central definition is already useful at f/4.5. Stopping down improves edge consistency and reduces the visible effects of field illumination falloff. The flat, highly symmetrical optical concept gives the lens a different spatial character from later retrofocus wide-angle designs.

Vignetting and distortion

Some corner darkening is expected at maximum aperture because of the extreme angle of coverage and the proximity of the rear element to the film plane. Geometric distortion is exceptionally low for a 21mm lens of this period.

Contrast and flare

The coated optical surfaces provide better contrast and flare resistance than earlier uncoated wide-angle lenses. Nevertheless, the very broad field can easily include strong light sources, so careful shading remains useful.


History

Development and Launch

Introduced in 1954, the 21mm Biogon extended the Contax system into true super-wide territory. It was one of the most ambitious production rangefinder lenses of its era and demonstrated the advantages of a non-retrofocus design on a camera without a reflex mirror.

Production Evolution

The principal optical identity remained the eight-element, five-group Biogon throughout production. Minor engraving and finish variations can occur, but these do not require separate optical profiles.

Special Editions and Variants

Production lenses may show different factory inscriptions and small cosmetic changes. These should be treated as marking or finish variants unless a demonstrable optical or mechanical difference is present.

Collector Notes

The exposed rear assembly, correct rear cap and original accessory finder are important considerations. Check the large glass surfaces for haze, coating damage and cleaning marks. Rangefinder coupling should also be tested, particularly when the lens is used on a body or adapter from another Contax-compatible system.
