About this lens

7artisans 35mm f/2 WEN (Mark II)

The 7artisans 35mm f/2 WEN belongs to the maker's "WEN" line, a group of compact manual lenses that 7artisans markets toward street and documentary photography. The Chinese character 文 (wen) engraved on the lens references 人文摄影, a term for social documentary or street photography, which sets the design intent for this small 35mm prime [1]. Compared with bigger and more complex 35mm f/2 designs such as the TTArtisan 35mm f/2 Apo-Aspherical, the WEN is a noticeably more compact and optically simpler lens that aims at portability rather than maximum correction.

The optical layout uses eight elements arranged in seven groups, a formula 7artisans introduced as a redesign for this second-generation lens rather than a carryover from the earlier 35mm f/2[2]. The aperture is built from ten mostly straight blades and runs from f/2 to f/22. Handling is fully mechanical: the focus ring turns about 90 degrees from the 0.7 m minimum focus distance to infinity, carries a small focus tab, and offers high but even resistance, while the aperture ring uses half-stop clicks between f/2 and f/8 and full stops from f/8 to f/22. The barrel is metal, with engraved and paint-filled markings, and the front branding appears printed or applied as a label. The lens is rangefinder coupled, brings up the correct 35mm framelines on a Leica M body, and keeps a constant external length while focusing, though it is not a true internal-focus design and produces some viewfinder blockage; the coupling can be user adjusted, and reviewers have noted that not every sample arrives perfectly calibrated.

The Mark II is a revised version of an earlier 7artisans 35mm f/2 for M mount. According to the manufacturer's announcement, the second generation carries a new optical design, extends the aperture range to f/22 where the original stopped at f/16, and is built from aluminum. The most visible external change is the switch from a round hood on the original to a square lens hood supplied with the WEN Mark II, which retailers use as an identifying feature[3]. The lens ships in stylized packaging with a leather case.

Optical qualities

Rendering Documented testing describes the WEN 35mm f/2 as a capable but unremarkable performer whose most distinctive trait is calm, unobtrusive out-of-focus rendering.

Sharpness Center performance is reported as good from wide open, with stopping down yielding crisper results across the frame; the corners benefit from further stopping down, and there is no floating-element close-focus correction. A focus shift between roughly f/2.8 and f/4 was noted as a weak point.

Bokeh and transitions Reviewers singled out the natural, unobtrusive background blur as a positive, noting it holds up reasonably even at longer focus distances, while also observing that f/2 at 35mm is not a strong background-separation tool to begin with.

Flare resistance Flare control is the lens's main weakness. Strong light sources, particularly just outside the frame, can cause heavy veiling flare, and wide open the lens can throw large ring-shaped artefacts; shading the front element noticeably improves results, and the situation cleans up on stopping down.

Distortion and vignetting Vignetting is rated average to low, measured at about 2.2 EV at f/2 and falling to roughly 1.2 EV by f/4. Distortion is described as average, largely uniform, and easily corrected in software.

Aberrations Coma correction is described as moderate, behind the Voigtländer VM 35mm f/2 Apo-Lanthar and the TTArtisan 35mm f/2 AA, but corrected well by about f/4.

Digital use The lens was tested on Leica M digital bodies and, via adapter, on Sony full-frame cameras, where its size and weight balance well.

History

Development and Launch The WEN Mark II arrived as a second-generation replacement for 7artisans' earlier compact 35mm f/2 M-mount lens. The earlier lens lacked the WEN designation and was smaller. The Mark II was announced with a new optical formula and was initially sold through the retailer Pergear before appearing on 7artisans' own channels, at an introductory price around 253 US dollars.

Production Evolution The principal documented changes from the first version are the redesigned eight-element optical formula, the extension of the aperture range from f/16 to f/22, an aluminum housing, and the move from a round to a square lens hood.

Collector Notes Buyers can distinguish the WEN Mark II by the 文 character and the square hood, the latter being the clearest external difference from the original round-hood version. Because the rangefinder coupling is user adjustable and not every unit ships perfectly calibrated, verifying rangefinder accuracy on the intended body is worthwhile. The bayonet has a small rim that some owners use to add 6-bit coding by hand, since the lens is not factory six-bit coded. Independent review specifications list the lens at about 46 mm long; LeicaLensList records a length of 58 mm, so dimensions are worth confirming against the specific unit and source.
