Optical Design & Construction

Mount Versions: Introduced on screw‑mount (LTM) in 1949, later available in Leica M-mount (from ~1954)

Optical Formula: Derived from the Xenon, it’s a fast normal lens optimized at infinity with a slightly longer focal length (~51.1 mm) and is sharpest beyond f/2.8

Elements/Groups: Typically, 6 elements in 4 groups (per Minilux camera variant) brass/aluminium alloy with cherry-chrome finish

Filter Thread: E41/41.5 mm—recommend using a screw-in UV filter due to older coatings being UV-transparent

Physical Specs

Weight: Approximately 300 g (brass variant ~335 g)

Dimensions: About 52 mm in length, front-heavy balance when used on compact bodies

Focus & Aperture:

Close focus: 1 m

Aperture: smooth half-stop clicks from f/1.5 to f/16; note tighter spacing between f/8–16. Infinity-lock lever for secure focus, though some find it fiddly

Image Quality & Character

Wide-open (f/1.5):

Produces a soft, dreamy “glow” with low contrast and classic Leica flair

Bokeh: smooth highlights, mild swirl, “classic Leica glow” in out-of-focus areas

Prone to flare due to vintage coatings—some users creatively exploit this,

Stopped down:

Significantly sharper and contrastier by f/2.8–f/5.6; performs well beyond those settings

Good retention of detail in highlights/shadows—ideal on M8/M9 digital bodies

Softness & Focus:

Expect edge and corner softness at f/1.5; center is reasonably sharp.

Focus shift reported—optimal stop-down improves performance
