Light Lens Lab Announces 75mm f/1.5 “Z21” for Leica M-Mount
Light Lens Lab has announced a new lens: the 75mm f/1.5 “Z21” for Leica M-mount.
This follows the earlier 50mm f/1.5 Z21, but now in a longer and much more portrait-focused focal length. And honestly, this one is quite interesting to me. Not only because it is a fast 75mm lens, but also because Light Lens Lab is not really presenting it as a copy of a specific vintage Leica lens.
A lot of their earlier lenses were based on classic designs, but the Z21 series seems to be more of their own thing. A shared rendering line, instead of just another remake.
The 75mm focal length makes a lot of sense for portraits. It gives you more compression than a 50mm, more subject separation, and with an f/1.5 aperture there should be plenty of room for smooth backgrounds and that slightly cinematic look.
Light Lens Lab describes the Z21 rendering as having tonal separation, atmospheric out-of-focus rendering and controlled optical imperfections. So I would not expect this to be a super clinical modern lens. It sounds more like a character lens that still tries to keep enough sharpness where it matters.
And for a 75mm f/1.5 portrait lens, that is probably the right approach.
The lens also uses a lanthanide-infused optical element and has an aluminium alloy body. Light Lens Lab also mentions improved corner sharpness, better edge-to-edge consistency and coverage for larger 44x33mm sensors.
The full specifications are also available on the Light Lens Lab 75mm f/1.5 Z21 lens page so you can start comparing these 75mm lenses!

I have not tested the lens yet, so this is only a short announcement for now. But on paper, this is one of the more interesting Light Lens Lab releases. Not because it is another vintage-inspired lens, but because it looks like they are slowly building their own rendering family with the Z21 series.
I like that direction.
A 75mm f/1.5 character lens for Leica M-mount sounds like something that could be very fun, especially for portraits. Now we just need to see how it actually behaves on a Leica M body.
I've requested a demo test unit, so stay tuned for this new blog post!
