Yasuhara

Yasuhara, also known through Yasuhara Co., Ltd. and Yasuhara Works, was a small Japanese camera brand founded by Shin Yasuhara, a former Kyocera camera engineer. The company is best known for the Yasuhara T981, also called Isshiki, a late 1990s mechanical 35mm rangefinder camera designed in Japan and manufactured in China by Phenix Optical. The T981 was created as a modern interpretation of the classic Leica screw mount rangefinder, using the Leica Thread Mount, also known as LTM, L39, or M39.

For LeicaLensList, Yasuhara is directly relevant because the T981 was built around Leica screw mount compatibility and was supplied with the Yasuhara MC 50mm f/2.8 lens. This makes Yasuhara one of the few modern camera brands to deliberately revive the Leica Thread Mount system after the classic LTM rangefinder era had largely ended. Although Yasuhara was a small and short-lived camera brand, it occupies an important niche in the history of modern Leica-compatible rangefinder cameras.

History

Founding / Early Years

The Yasuhara story began with Shin Yasuhara, a Japanese camera engineer who worked for Kyocera. Yasuhara left Kyocera in 1997 and began developing the idea of a new mechanical rangefinder camera that could use classic Leica screw mount lenses. His concept was not to make a luxury Leica competitor, but to create a practical modern camera that gave photographers access to the large existing catalog of LTM lenses.

By 1998, Yasuhara had started presenting his project online under the Yasuhara Works name. This was unusual for the period, because the camera was promoted mainly through early internet interest rather than traditional advertising. The project attracted attention from rangefinder enthusiasts who wanted a new Leica screw mount camera at a time when few modern LTM bodies were available.

T981 Isshiki Development

The company’s main product was the Yasuhara T981, also called Isshiki, a Japanese word commonly interpreted as “complete set” or “all you need.” The camera was designed around a simple idea: one compact mechanical rangefinder body, one normal lens, and access to the large world of Leica screw mount optics.

Because Yasuhara did not have its own manufacturing facilities, the camera was produced in China by Phenix Optical. The T981 used a Leica Thread Mount, a coupled rangefinder, a mechanical Copal vertical metal shutter, a TTL-style LED exposure display, a hinged film door, and a large 1:1 viewfinder with 50mm framelines. This gave the camera a mixture of classic LTM compatibility and late twentieth-century practical features.

Market Entry

The Yasuhara T981 was announced in the late 1990s and began reaching the market around 1999. It arrived just before the early 2000s rangefinder revival that also included cameras from Cosina Voigtländer and Konica. In that context, the T981 was unusual because it used the older Leica screw mount rather than Leica M mount.

The camera was sold with a matching Yasuhara MC 50mm f/2.8 lens. This lens was the only lens made specifically for the camera. It was manufactured in China and appears closely related to an existing Phenix or Tiansai 50mm f/2.8 design. The lens used Leica screw mount and was rangefinder-coupled, making it directly relevant to LTM collectors.

Phenix Variants and Limited Production

The Yasuhara T981 was also connected to Phenix-branded variants, including the Phenix JG-50, a commemorative Chinese-market version. These variants shared much of the same design and manufacturing background but were marketed differently. The Yasuhara-branded T981 remained the best-known export-oriented version.

Production was limited. CameraQuest reported that production was winding down by the early 2000s after about 4,000 T981 cameras had been made. This limited production, combined with the camera’s unusual LTM mount and modern mechanical design, has made the T981 a collectible late film-era rangefinder.

Later Activity

After the T981, Shin Yasuhara continued working on camera projects. The brand is also associated with the Yasuhara T012, a later fixed-lens panoramic-style camera. Unlike the T981, the T012 is not central to LeicaLensList because it does not belong to the Leica screw mount or Leica M ecosystem. The T981 remains Yasuhara’s most important camera for Leica-compatible collectors.

Leica Thread Mount Rangefinder Cameras

The most important Yasuhara product for LeicaLensList is the Yasuhara T981 Isshiki. It is a 35mm mechanical rangefinder camera using the Leica Thread Mount. The camera was designed to accept classic LTM lenses from Leica, Canon, Nikon, Soviet makers, and other third-party manufacturers.

Yasuhara MC 50mm f/2.8 Lens

The Yasuhara MC 50mm f/2.8 was the standard lens supplied with the T981. It is a compact multi-coated normal lens in Leica screw mount. The lens has a 50mm focal length, f/2.8 maximum aperture, rangefinder coupling, and a 4 elements in 3 groups optical construction. It is important because it was the only lens made specifically for the Yasuhara T981 system.

Phenix and Related Variants

The T981 was manufactured by Phenix Optical in China, and related Phenix-branded variants were produced. The Phenix JG-50 is the best-known related version. These cameras are closely connected to Yasuhara history but should be treated carefully in database entries, because Phenix-branded cameras and lenses may deserve separate make or variant records depending on the exact item.

Later Yasuhara Cameras

Yasuhara later developed the T012, a compact fixed-lens camera. This product shows that the company’s activity was not limited to the T981, but it is less relevant to LeicaLensList because it does not use Leica screw mount or Leica M mount.

Market Reception

Yasuhara has a small but distinctive reputation among rangefinder collectors. The T981 is often viewed as an unusual late film-era attempt to modernize the Leica screw mount camera without turning it into a luxury product. It combined the old LTM ecosystem with features that were uncommon on classic screw mount bodies, such as a large bright viewfinder, a modern vertical metal shutter, a built-in meter, and a hinged film door.

The brand is especially interesting because it appeared just before the wider rangefinder revival of the late 1990s and early 2000s. While Cosina Voigtländer later became the dominant modern producer of LTM and M-mount rangefinder equipment, Yasuhara reached the market earlier with a smaller, more independent project.

Collectors value Yasuhara mainly for rarity, concept, and Leica screw mount compatibility. The T981 is not usually regarded as a Leica-level precision camera, but it is appreciated as a practical and historically interesting modern LTM body. The matching Yasuhara MC 50mm f/2.8 lens is collectible because it was the only lens made specifically for the camera and because modern dedicated Leica screw mount lenses are uncommon.

For LeicaLensList, Yasuhara should be treated as a valid make. Its importance is narrow but clear: a modern Japanese-designed, Chinese-manufactured Leica Thread Mount rangefinder system with a dedicated 50mm LTM lens.
