Wega
Wega was an Italian camera and lens make produced by AFIOM in Pordenone during the 1950s. The range consisted of compact 35mm cameras closely based on the Leica screw-mount concept, together with collapsible standard lenses such as the Wega Anastigmat 50mm f/3.5 and Trixar Anastigmat 50mm f/3.5. Wega is distinct from unrelated later companies and products that used the same name.
History
Founding / Early Years
AFIOM began Wega camera production around the start of the 1950s. The original Wega followed the layout of the Leica Standard, using a cloth focal-plane shutter, interchangeable screw lenses, and scale focusing. It formed part of a small but active Italian industry that produced Leica-inspired cameras after the Second World War.
Market Entry
The product line progressed to the Wega IIa, which added a coupled rangefinder, and the Wega IIIa. Wega cameras and lenses were shown to a wider public during the early 1950s, including at the Milan trade fair in 1953. Standard lenses included collapsible Wega Anastigmat and Trixar Anastigmat 50mm f/3.5 models in Leica-compatible M39 screw mount.
Expansion / Modern Period
Wega production remained limited. Specialist estimates place total camera output in the low thousands rather than at mass-market scale. Italian collector research reports that AFIOM's machinery or assets were sold to Domenico Chinaglia around 1956, linking the end of Wega production with the Kristall maker. The brand did not continue as a modern rangefinder-camera manufacturer.

The Wega Standard, IIa, and IIIa represent the principal documented camera progression from scale focusing to coupled rangefinder operation.
LTM Standard Lenses
The Wega Anastigmat 50mm f/3.5 Collapsible and Trixar Anastigmat 50mm f/3.5 were supplied as standard Leica-thread lenses.

Market Reception
Wega cameras and lenses are recognized as uncommon examples of Italian postwar precision manufacturing. They attract collectors of Leica copies, regional camera history, and rare LTM lenses. Their modest production makes originality important, particularly the match between camera, lens, finder, and serial details. Wega's significance is historical and collectible rather than based on a large professional system or continued modern production.
