Phenix
Phenix is a Chinese camera and optical-equipment make originating with the Jiangxi Optical Instrument General Factory, established in 1965. The company produced cameras, lenses, binoculars, microscopes, and precision optical components before expanding into modern imaging and industrial optics. Its Leica-related product is the limited-edition JG50 rangefinder and the accompanying collapsible Phenix MC 50mm f/2.8 in Leica screw mount.
History
Founding / Early Years
The Jiangxi optical enterprise was established on 15 August 1965 as part of China's inland industrial-development program. Personnel and equipment came in part from established optical and camera operations in Shanghai and Nanjing. The new factory moved toward full production by the end of the 1960s and developed a broad capability in cameras and precision optical manufacturing.
Market Entry
Phenix became a recognized consumer camera brand during the later twentieth century. Its catalogue included 35mm cameras, interchangeable lenses, compact cameras, and optical instruments. The company participated in both domestic production and export or contract-manufacturing work as China's camera industry modernized.
Expansion / Modern Period
In 1999, a limited run of JG50 rangefinder cameras commemorated the fiftieth anniversary of the People's Republic of China. The camera used Leica M39 screw mount and was paired with a collapsible Phenix MC 50mm f/2.8. Production is reported as 500 examples. The wider Phenix business continued beyond film cameras and now describes activities in optical components, machine vision, automotive and infrared optics, microscopy, and intelligent imaging products.

Market Reception
Phenix is recognized as one of China's established camera and optical brands. The JG50 and its collapsible 50mm lens occupy a small, collectible corner of the Leica screw-mount market because of their limited production and commemorative design. They are substantially newer than classic prewar and postwar LTM equipment, yet remain relevant to rangefinder-camera history as a late example of a native Leica-thread system.
