Peerless

Peerless

Peerless is the collector-facing identity used for a very small group of Nicca-made Leica screw-mount cameras ordered by Peerless Photo Supply of New York. It was an importer and retail marking rather than an independent Japanese camera manufacturer. LeicaLensList treats Peerless separately because the top plate, baseplate and supplied lens distinguish these cameras from ordinary Nicca Type-3 production.

History

Importer Order

In 1949 Peerless Photo Supply commissioned a small batch of Nicca Type-3 cameras. The top cover was engraved Peerless Type-3, while the baseplate stated that the camera was made for Peerless Photo Supply by Nicca Camera Works.

Production Context

Known serial numbers sit within the normal Nicca Type-3 sequence rather than forming a clearly isolated block. Specialist research documents only a handful of examples and suggests that total production was small, possibly fewer than sixty, but no definitive factory total is known.

Standard Lens

Peerless examples were supplied with collapsible Sun Sophia 5 cm f/2 lenses instead of the Nikkor lenses commonly associated with contemporary Nicca cameras.

Peerless Type-3

The Type-3 is the only well-documented Peerless Leica-style rangefinder. It retains the Nicca Type-3 construction, coupled rangefinder, separate finder and Leica 39 mm screw mount.

Market Reception

Peerless Type-3 cameras are valued for their rarity and their place in the early American distribution history of Japanese Leica copies. Because the camera is mechanically a Nicca, collector significance rests heavily on original Peerless markings, the period Sun lens and unaltered components. A normal Nicca Type-3 should not be reassigned to Peerless without the documented engravings.
