Zuiho W. Honor 35mm f/3.5

The W. Honor 35mm f/3.5 is a wide-angle lens marketed for the late-1950s Honor rangefinder system. Its existence is documented by a specialist collector reference and by a Leitz Photographica Auction Honor S1 Type II set. Photographed examples use Leica thread mount construction and were supplied with a matching external 35mm finder.

The available sources do not provide a dependable optical formula, diaphragm-blade count, minimum focusing distance, filter fitting, dimensions, weight or exact production span. Those specifications should remain unknown. They must not be copied from a similarly styled Komura, Acall, Tanar or another 35mm f/3.5 lens.

The lens has a rigid manual-focus barrel and was intended for Leica-style screw-mount rangefinder use. Composition normally requires an external finder on an Honor S1 or another body without 35mm framing. On a Leica M camera, a suitable 35mm LTM-to-M adapter is required. Mechanical coupling and calibration should be verified on the individual lens.

Rendering

No controlled performance test for the exact W. Honor 35mm f/3.5 has been located. The confirmed 35mm focal length and f/3.5 maximum aperture establish its field-of-view and exposure role, but do not support claims about a particular sharpness profile, bokeh character or color rendering.

Sharpness

The lens should not inherit test results from a Komura, Acall or Tanar merely because the barrels resemble one another. Until the optical identity is documented, version-specific sharpness statements would create false precision.

Contrast and flare resistance

No dependable source cited here measures contrast, coating efficiency or flare behaviour. Haze, cleaning damage, decentring and rangefinder adjustment can strongly influence present-day results.

Digital use

A mirrorless adapter permits direct sensor focusing and can help assess an individual sample. Such use does not establish the original rangefinder calibration or prove that a similar-looking lens shares the same optical construction.

History

Development and Launch

Pacific Rim Camera dates the Honor S1 Type II to 1957 and records the Honor system’s normal-lens options. Leitz Photographica Auction documents a period S1 Type II set containing both an Honor 50mm f/2 and a W. Honor 35mm f/3.5. This establishes the wide-angle as a contemporary Honor-system accessory.

The broader Honor history remains incomplete. Specialist research traces the camera design through Dai-ichi Optical and Mejiro Optical, with period manufacturer references shifting toward Zuiho around 1958.

Production Evolution

Pacific Rim Camera reports that Zuiho was not itself an optical manufacturer and considers Komura manufacture of the W. Honor likely because of its close resemblance to contemporary Komura, Acall and Tanar lenses. A Japanese Honor-system study also describes it as a Komura-supplied product. Neither source presents a surviving factory production record, so the attribution should remain qualified.

Available photographs show exterior variation, including an all-black example in a period camera set. No evidence currently demonstrates that finish changes correspond to separate optical generations.

Special Editions/Variants

No factory special edition has been reliably documented. Different finishes, finders or accessory combinations should not be treated as special editions without supporting catalogue evidence.

Collector Notes

The full W. Honor 1:3.5 f=35mm engraving, Leica-thread rear construction and period external finder are the most useful identification features. Individual production numbers should be recorded privately with an object’s provenance, but are not part of the generic LeicaLensList profile.

For use, inspect the focusing mechanism, aperture action, rear coupling surface and glass. Similar styling is not sufficient to rebrand an unmarked or differently named lens as a W. Honor, and unverified specifications from related lenses should remain excluded.
