About this lens
Peace Lens Optics 35mm f/1.4 E41 Classical
The Peace Lens Optics 35mm f/1.4 E41 Classical is a modern Leica M-mount rangefinder lens developed by Chinese boutique manufacturer Peace Lens Optics, also known as 和平光学. Announced in 2024, it became the company's first widely documented production lens and was conceived as a modern interpretation of the early Leica Summilux-M 35mm f/1.4 commonly associated with the Steel Rim design. The exterior deliberately references that historical lens, including its stainless-steel front rim, compact proportions, focusing tab with infinity lock and E41 filter fitting.
The lens uses seven elements in five groups in a Double Gauss-type optical configuration. It has a ten-blade diaphragm, an aperture range from f/1.4 to f/16 and a minimum focusing distance of 0.7 metres. Unlike some purely cosmetic recreations of vintage rangefinder lenses, the Peace 35mm is mechanically coupled to the Leica M rangefinder. The standard silver-chrome version uses a brass barrel and weighs approximately 210 g, with official dimensions of approximately 52 mm in diameter and 26 mm in length excluding the mount and protruding controls.
Although the lens is strongly influenced by Leica's historic 35mm f/1.4 design, it should be catalogued under Peace Lens Optics rather than as a Leica replica variant. Peace has modified the mechanical design for contemporary use, particularly by extending close focusing to 0.7 metres. Several factory finishes have been produced, including silver chrome, black paint and piano black. These share the same basic E41 Classical identity, although separate manufacturer catalogue numbers for the black finishes have not been reliably documented.
Optical qualities
Rendering
Peace Lens Optics deliberately designed the 35mm f/1.4 E41 Classical to retain characteristics associated with vintage fast rangefinder optics rather than pursuing uniformly high correction at all apertures. The manufacturer and authorized distributor describe a softer image at f/1.4, including visible glow or light diffusion around bright areas, with the image becoming progressively more defined as the aperture is stopped down.
Sharpness
At maximum aperture the design prioritizes a softer classical presentation rather than edge-to-edge sharpness. Official descriptions state that definition becomes noticeably stronger when stopped down. Detailed independent laboratory measurements of resolution across the image field remain limited, so more precise claims about centre and corner performance should be treated cautiously.
Contrast and color
Official material describes relatively gentle contrast at maximum aperture, contributing to the intended vintage appearance. Stopping down increases apparent contrast and image definition. The lens uses modern manufacturing and coatings, so its behavior should not be assumed to duplicate an original 1960s Leica lens exactly.
Bokeh and transitions
The ten-blade diaphragm maintains a relatively rounded aperture opening through much of the aperture range. Peace Lens Optics promotes the design for the softer transitions and background rendering associated with its classical optical concept, although comprehensive independent comparative testing remains limited.
Flare resistance
Strong light can produce glow and lowered contrast, particularly at wider apertures. This is partly consistent with the manufacturer's intended rendering character. Peace also offers a dedicated recreation of the historical OLLUX/12522-style hood for the lens.
History
Development and Launch
Peace Lens Optics is a small Chinese lens manufacturer focused on low-volume lenses for Leica enthusiasts. The company publicly introduced the PEACE 35mm f/1.4 CLASSICAL in 2024 as its first major lens project.
The design was developed as an interpretation of the early Leica Summilux-M 35mm f/1.4 Steel Rim. Peace studied both the physical appearance and rendering characteristics of the historical lens while incorporating modern manufacturing techniques and a closer minimum focusing distance.
Small quantities reached specialist markets before a conventional retail launch. Japanese distributor Shoten Kobo offered examples at specialist camera events during 2025 in silver chrome, black paint and piano black finishes.
The silver-chrome version received a regular Japanese retail release on 12 June 2026. Shoten Kobo lists the silver lens under model number PE-35F14-E41-S and describes it as a brass-bodied, rangefinder-coupled Leica M lens.
Production Evolution
The basic production design uses seven elements in five groups, a ten-blade diaphragm and an E41 filter fitting. No confirmed optical redesign has been documented since its introduction.
The production lens focuses to 0.7 metres, making it more practical at close distances than the historical lens that inspired its styling. Rangefinder coupling is provided for normal Leica M use within the coupled focusing range.
The standard silver-chrome production version uses a brass barrel and weighs approximately 210 g. Peace's focus on relatively small production quantities means that minor details can potentially vary between batches, and its distributor explicitly notes that product details can differ slightly between production lots.
Special Editions/Variants
Black paint: A factory black-paint version has been offered alongside the silver-chrome lens. It retains the same E41 Classical design and Leica M mount. A separate official catalogue number has not been confirmed.
Piano black: Peace Lens Optics has also produced a high-gloss piano-black factory finish. It has been sold separately from the conventional black-paint version and commanded a higher retail price at specialist events. No separate manufacturer catalogue number has been reliably confirmed.
The existence of three distinct finishes, silver chrome, black paint and piano black, is documented by Peace's authorized Japanese distributor. They should be treated as factory finish variants of the same 35mm f/1.4 E41 Classical rather than separate optical lens profiles.
Collector Notes
The most useful identifiers are the PEACE branding, 35mm f/1.4 engraving, E41 front specification, Steel Rim-style stainless front ring, infinity-lock focusing tab and Leica M bayonet.
The lens should not be listed as an original Leica Summilux. Although its design is intentionally based on the historical Steel Rim concept, it is an independently manufactured Peace Lens Optics product.
The silver-chrome version has an official Japanese model number, PE-35F14-E41-S. Separate catalogue numbers for the black-paint and piano-black versions have not yet been reliably documented, so these numbers should not be guessed.
Buyers should verify rangefinder calibration, particularly at f/1.4 where focusing accuracy is critical. The focusing mechanism, infinity lock and ten-blade aperture should operate smoothly. Because the manufacturer works in relatively small production runs, checking optical centering and mechanical consistency on individual examples is also advisable.
Original accessories include a dedicated OLLUX/12522-style black lens hood, an E41 UV filter and an E41 ND8 filter. These accessories are modern Peace Lens Optics products designed specifically to complement the Classical lens rather than original Leica accessories.
