Zenit M

The Zenit M is a full-frame digital rangefinder introduced in 2018 as a joint project involving Krasnogorsky Zavod and Leica Camera AG. Rostec described the camera as technically based on the Leica M Typ 240 platform, with changes to components, software and exterior design [1]. It uses the Leica M bayonet and a 24-megapixel CMOS sensor.

Zenit's official booklet specifies a 60 second to 1/4000 second shutter range, 1/180 second flash synchronization, 2-second and 12-second self-timer settings, dimensions of approximately 152 x 80 x 42mm and a body weight of about 710g [2]. The camera was marketed with the Russian-made Zenitar 35mm f/1.0 lens, but the camera profile should remain independent of the kit lens.

History

Development and Launch

The Zenit M was publicly presented at Photokina in Cologne on 26 September 2018. Rostec announced European availability from December 2018 [1]. Commercial sales were formally launched in 2019 [3].

Production Evolution

The production camera retained the core Leica M Typ 240 architecture while receiving Zenit exterior styling and project-specific software and component changes [1]. It was produced in limited numbers rather than as a mass-market system body.

Special Variants

Official material shows black and silver design variants [2]. These finishes belong in metadata and do not require separate base camera profiles.

Collector Notes

Collectors should verify the camera serial number, original documentation and whether a sale includes the matching Zenitar 35mm f/1.0 lens. The kit configuration is commercially important, but it does not change the camera's M mount or base identity.
