Snider 35
The Snider 35 is an Australian-market version of the Nicca Type-5. It retains the Type-5's die-cast LTM body, removable side-hinged loading flap, separate finder and rangefinder, automatic flash synchronization and cloth shutter reaching 1/1000 second [1].
The standard outfit substituted a German Schneider-Kreuznach Xenon 50 mm f/2 for Nicca's usual Nikkor lenses. The top plate is engraved “Snider35” [1].
History
Development and Launch
Australian importer Gardner and Salmon reportedly ordered 90 cameras. Fewer than 60 were sold, and Australian advertising documents the model by October 1956, although assembly may date from 1955 [1].
Production Evolution
Confirmed body numbers are 15507, 15512 and 15527. Other probable examples are known, but the available photographs do not establish a complete production range [1].
Special Variants
At least one surviving outfit includes a Schneider Xenogon 35 mm f/2.8. This is an accessory-lens association, not evidence of a separate camera edition.
Collector Notes
Verify the Snider35 engraving, five-digit serial number, Type-5 loading flap and preferably the original Xenon 50 mm f/2. Because ordinary Type-5 bodies are mechanically similar, engraving and provenance are essential.
