Epson R-D1xG
The Epson R-D1xG is a digital M-mount rangefinder released in Japan in April 2009. It uses a 6.1-megapixel APS-C CCD sensor, a 1.0x coupled optical finder and selectable 28mm, 35mm and 50mm bright frames [1]. The G designation identifies the kit supplied with Epson's removable handgrip.
Its EM mount is compatible with Leica M lenses and can accept suitable LTM lenses through an adapter. The camera retains the R-D1 family's manually operated shutter-charging lever, 1 second to 1/2000 second electronic focal-plane shutter and 1/125 second X synchronization [1]. Changes from the R-D1s include a fixed 2.5-inch LCD and SDHC card support up to 32GB [1].
History
Development and Launch
Seiko Epson released the R-D1xG in April 2009 as the final major production version of its digital rangefinder line [2]. It preserved the established 6.1-megapixel imaging system while improving storage support and rear-screen usability.
Production Evolution
The R-D1xG followed the R-D1 and R-D1s. The larger fixed LCD replaced the earlier reversible 2.0-inch display, while SDHC compatibility expanded practical card capacity [1].
Special Variants
The closely related R-D1x body and the R-D1xG grip kit should not be confused. LeicaLensList should retain the R-D1xG name for the grip-kit model documented by Epson.
Collector Notes
Collectors should verify that an R-D1xG retains its dedicated removable grip. Rangefinder calibration, battery condition, rear-screen operation and the manual shutter-charging mechanism remain important checks. Epson ended repair support for the model in March 2021 [3].
