Epson R-D1s
The Epson R-D1s is a digital rangefinder camera introduced by Seiko Epson in March 2006. It combines a 6.1-megapixel APS-C CCD sensor with an EM bayonet compatible with Leica M lenses, a coupled optical rangefinder and a manually operated shutter-charging lever [1]. Its 1.0x finder provides selectable 28mm, 35mm and 50mm bright frames with automatic parallax compensation [1].
The electronically controlled vertical-travel focal-plane shutter covers 1 second to 1/2000 second plus Bulb, with X synchronization at 1/125 second [1]. The body retains the unusual analogue top-plate indicator and reversible 2.0-inch LCD associated with the R-D1 series. Compared with the original R-D1, the R-D1s added RAW+JPEG recording, Adobe RGB support, improved image enlargement and long-exposure noise reduction [2].
History
Development and Launch
Seiko Epson released the R-D1s in March 2006 as the factory successor to the pioneering R-D1 digital rangefinder [2]. The camera continued Epson's collaboration with Cosina and preserved the tactile, manually cocked shooting sequence of the original design.
Production Evolution
The R-D1s was principally a firmware and feature revision rather than a new mechanical platform. Epson later made comparable functions available to original R-D1 owners through firmware version 2.00 [3].

Collector Notes
Collectors should distinguish a factory-marked R-D1s from an original R-D1 upgraded to similar firmware functionality. Battery condition, rangefinder alignment, LCD articulation and the shutter-charging mechanism are important inspection points.
