Nicca Type-5
The Nicca Type-5 is the company's first die-cast LTM rangefinder. Introduced in 1955, it combines Leica IIIf-like controls with a removable, side-hinged rear flap that eases film loading [1].
Its cloth shutter reaches 1/1000 second. A single rear PC socket selects X or FP synchronization automatically according to shutter speed, with electronic X sync available through 1/25 second [1].
History
Development and Launch
The Type-5 was released in March 1955, with advertising documented in May. It moved Nicca from the smaller stamped Leica III pattern to a larger die-cast body inspired by the Leica IIIc and IIIf [1].
Production Evolution
Observed serials run approximately from 125001 to 13153x. The model introduced a revised shutter-speed sequence, a slow-speed dial lock and a single automatic-sync terminal. Later standard Nikkor 5 cm f/2 lenses gained a black aperture-scale band [1].
Special Variants
The Australian Snider 35 is a separately branded Type-5 derivative and should remain its own profile. Ordinary Type-5 lens and minor finish differences are not editions.
Collector Notes
Verify the side-hinged removable rear flap, black metal band above the covering, offset rear PC socket and 1/1000 setting. The loading door is unique among Nicca's standard Type-5 family and may be missing or damaged.
