Nicca Type-4

The Nicca Type-4 is a scarce 1953 LTM rangefinder and the premium development of Nicca's stamped-body line. Its principal upgrade is a cloth shutter reaching 1/1000 second, paired with a revised 1/25 second changeover speed [1].

The camera retains a separate fixed 50 mm finder and reported 1.5x coupled rangefinder. Dual front PC sockets support FP flashbulbs at high speeds and electronic X synchronization through 1/25 second [1].

History

Development and Launch

Japanese authority Mikio Awano dates the Type-4 to August 1953. Period advertising appeared in October, and the model initiated Nicca's premium branch that led to the Type-5 [1].

Production Evolution

Observed serials run approximately from 80007 to 8119x. Film-reminder dials vary between ASA-only and combined ASA/DIN designs, while about half of observed cameras carry a flash-socket nameplate [1].

Special Variants

The alternate reminder dials and labeled sync sockets are normal production variations, not special editions.

Collector Notes

Confirm the engraved Type-4 name, 1/1000 setting and 1/25 progression. The related Nicca 3-S looks similar but stops at 1/500. Late loading or sync instruction plates may be original on a small number of Type-4 bodies.
