Leotax Special
The Leotax Special is a postwar Japanese LTM rangefinder introduced in 1946. It is closely related to the earlier Special A, retaining the coupled rangefinder and unusual three-window arrangement developed to avoid Leica patents.
It has no slow-speed mechanism, flash synchronization or self timer. The cloth focal-plane shutter reaches 1/500 second, and surviving outfits commonly carry a collapsible 5 cm f/3.5 Letana Anastigmat or 50 mm f/3.5 State lens.
History
Development and Launch
Showa Kogaku resumed camera production soon after the Second World War and released the Special in 1946. The design was effectively a postwar development of the 1942 Special A.
Production Evolution
Unlike most earlier Leotax bodies, the Special lacks strap lugs. Its Z-marked shutter dial and patent-avoiding finder layout preceded the conventionally arranged Special D models of 1947.
Special Variants
Special is the official model name, not an edition designation. Letana and State standard-lens combinations should be recorded as outfit metadata.
Collector Notes
Check the three front windows, absence of strap lugs, Z shutter marking and serial number. Components shared with nearby Leotax models make originality and correct finder construction important.
