Mir
The KMZ Mir is a Soviet 35mm coupled-rangefinder camera produced from 1959 to 1961. It uses an M39 screw lens mount and combines a removable rear body shell, integrated viewfinder-rangefinder, mechanical self-timer and adjustable flash synchronization.[1][3]
Mir, written Мир in Cyrillic, means “peace” or “world.” The camera was developed as a lower-cost version of the Zorki 4 for the domestic Soviet market. Its principal simplification was the removal of the slow shutter-speed mechanism and the marked 1/1000-second setting.[1][3]
History
Development and Production
The Mir entered production in 1959. KMZ manufactured 79,500 cameras in 1959, 76,535 in 1960 and only 194 in 1961, giving an official total of 156,229 units.[2]
The camera retains most of the Zorki 4 body and control layout. It has the same combined finder, removable rear section, self-timer and flash-synchronization system, but offers a reduced shutter-speed range.
Relationship to the Zorki 4
The Mir was positioned below the Zorki 4. The Zorki 4 provides slow speeds down to one second and a marked maximum speed of 1/1000 second. The Mir is marked only with B, 1/30, 1/60, 1/125, 1/250 and 1/500 second.[1][3]
Some Mir examples reportedly operate at approximately 1/1000 second when the selector is placed at an unmarked position or black dot. This is not part of the official marked specification and should not be entered as a regular shutter speed.[3]
The simplified shutter has fewer slow-speed components than the Zorki 4. This reduces mechanical complexity, although condition still depends heavily on maintenance and shutter-curtain health.
Viewfinder and Flash
The viewfinder and coupled rangefinder are combined in a single eyepiece. The fixed view corresponds approximately to a 50 mm lens and contains no projected framelines.[1][4]
Finder magnification is approximately 0.6×, with a physical rangefinder base of 38 mm. A control beneath the rewind knob provides diopter adjustment.[4]
The accessory shoe is not electrically connected. Flash units attach through the front cable socket. The synchronization control allows adjustment for electronic flash and flashbulbs with different ignition delays. Full-aperture flash synchronization is available at 1/30 second.[1]
Dimensions and Weight
A measured Mir body is approximately 146 mm wide, 90 mm high and 36 mm deep, with a body-only weight of approximately 590 g.[5]
Measurements that include an Industar-50 or Jupiter-8 lens are deeper and heavier. Lens, case and accessories should therefore be excluded from the main body specification.
Lens Kits
The 1959 manual lists the Industar-50 50 mm f/3.5 and Industar-26M 50 mm f/2.8 as standard lenses.[1]
Surviving cameras are also commonly found with the Jupiter-8 50 mm f/2, particularly from 1960 production. Collapsible Industar-22 lenses are also encountered.[3]
The attached lens should be stored as listing metadata rather than included in the camera name.
Combined Variants
Early Mir cameras have decorative raised rims around the front finder windows, similar to early Zorki 4 bodies. The earliest documented engraving style is uncommon.[3]
Collector classifications distinguish several early configurations based on:
- Model-name engraving style
- Decorative finder-window rims
- Presence of an accessory-shoe stop screw
- Body covering
- Shutter-selector markings
Later cameras generally have a smoother front housing without decorative finder rims. These production changes should remain combined under one Mir page.
Rare blue, white or other unusually covered cameras should be treated cautiously. Recovered and repainted Soviet cameras are common, so finish originality should be assessed from materials, wear and production details.
Serial Number Information
Mir serial numbers normally begin with the final two digits of the production year. Regular prefixes are therefore 59, 60 and 61.
A detailed collector classification documents serial number 5924649 as its earliest known example. Early variant ranges overlap, so serial numbers alone cannot reliably determine the precise configuration.[3]
Only 194 cameras are recorded for 1961, making genuine 61-prefix examples considerably less common. No confirmed continuous start-to-end serial range is available.

A standard Mir has:

- No marked slow shutter speeds
- No marked 1/1000-second setting
The Zorki 4 looks very similar but has slow speeds and a marked 1/1000-second setting. The model name Мир appears on the upper housing.
