FED-5

The FED-5 is a Soviet 35mm interchangeable-lens rangefinder camera introduced in 1977 by the FED factory in Kharkiv, in the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic. It was the final major development of the FED screw-mount rangefinder line and replaced the earlier FED-4.

This entry combines the standard FED-5, the meterless FED-5V / FED-5B, and the bright-line FED-5S / FED-5C. The variants share the same basic body, M39 lens mount, mechanical cloth shutter, removable rear cover and coupled rangefinder system. Combining them avoids separate pages for cameras whose technical foundations and market values substantially overlap.

The camera uses a 39mm screw mount for interchangeable rangefinder lenses. The correct database mount value is M39, rather than LTM. Although the physical dimensions are derived from the Leica screw-mount system, Soviet camera and lens calibration can vary enough that compatibility and rangefinder accuracy should be checked with the actual lens and body.

The FED-5 is an M39 rangefinder camera and should not be confused with M39 Zenit SLR cameras. Those cameras use the same nominal thread diameter but a substantially different flange focal distance.

The shutter is a horizontal-travel cloth focal-plane design with speeds from 1 second to 1/500 second, plus Bulb. As with many FED and Zorki rangefinders, the shutter should be cocked before changing the shutter speed. Turning the speed selector while the shutter is released can damage the setting mechanism.


History

Development and Launch

The FED-5 was introduced in 1977 as a redesigned successor to the FED-4. It retained the FED-4’s slow-speed shutter, mechanical self-timer, removable back and selenium metering concept, but introduced a revised top plate, different exposure calculator and updated external styling.

Most specialist references place FED-5 family production between 1977 and approximately 1990. Some retail and secondary references give dates extending into the mid-1990s, which may reflect later assembly, stock distribution or differing interpretations of the end of production.

The FED-5 family was produced in large numbers and was exported to numerous markets. Standard bodies are commonly finished in silver metal with black leatherette, although changes to nameplates, coverings, logos and control details occurred throughout production.

Combined Variant Structure

The three principal versions are combined under this FED-5 entry:

The alternate Latin names result from transliteration. The Cyrillic letter В corresponds to the Latin sound and letter V, but is frequently written as B in Western listings. The Cyrillic letter С corresponds to the Latin S, but is frequently copied visually as C.

Listings for FED-5B and FED-5V therefore normally describe the same variant. Likewise, FED-5C and FED-5S normally refer to the same variant.

FED-5 Standard Version

The standard FED-5 includes an uncoupled selenium exposure meter on the top plate. The meter does not automatically control the shutter or aperture. Instead, the photographer reads an exposure value from the meter and transfers it manually to the exposure calculator.

The standard finder is combined with the coupled rangefinder and includes adjustable diopter correction around the eyepiece. It does not have the defined normal-lens bright-line frame associated with the FED-5S / 5C.

FED-5V / FED-5B

The FED-5V, commonly advertised as the FED-5B, is the meterless version. The large exposure-meter assembly is removed and replaced by a simpler rewind and film-speed reminder arrangement.

The 5V / 5B retains the mechanical shutter, coupled rangefinder, self-timer and M39 mount. The removal of the selenium meter reduces the body weight, with retailer measurements commonly placing this version around 582 to 590 g, compared with approximately 623 g for the standard metered FED-5.

Because the meter is often non-functional on surviving FED-5 cameras, working condition, lens and cosmetic condition can affect market value more strongly than the presence or absence of the meter.

FED-5S / FED-5C

The FED-5S, commonly written FED-5C, retains the uncoupled selenium exposure meter but removes the adjustable diopter mechanism.

Its main viewfinder difference is a bright-line frame intended for the standard 50mm or 55mm lens. The frame is not automatically parallax corrected. Smaller markings indicate approximate framing at close focusing distances.

The FED-5S / 5C is the most visually distinctive finder variant, but it remains mechanically part of the same FED-5 family. It should therefore be stored as a variant rather than as an entirely separate camera page.

Published figures vary because some sources include the standard Industar lens, leather case or protruding controls. The original manuals often provide a weight of approximately 0.96 to 0.99 kg with the camera in its case, which should not be used as the body-only database weight.

The meterless FED-5V / 5B is lighter, commonly measured around 582 to 590 g. The main specification uses the standard metered FED-5 because that is the base model represented by the page.

The camera has a mechanical self-timer with its own activation button. The timer should be tested carefully, as aged lubrication can cause slow or incomplete operation.

Exposure Meter

The standard FED-5 and FED-5S / 5C use an uncoupled selenium exposure meter. It requires no battery, but selenium cells lose sensitivity with age. Many surviving meters are inaccurate or completely inactive.

Meter condition should be recorded separately from camera model identity. A non-working selenium meter does not turn a FED-5 into a FED-5V / 5B. The physical presence or absence of the meter housing determines the variant.

Rangefinder and Viewfinder

The FED-5 uses a combined optical finder and coupled coincidence rangefinder. The rangefinder base is commonly reported as approximately 43 mm.

This relatively short base is adequate for the standard Industar-61 L/D lens, but it is less precise with very fast or longer focal-length lenses. Rangefinder alignment should therefore be checked carefully when using lenses such as the Jupiter-3 or Jupiter-9.

The standard FED-5 and FED-5V / 5B provide diopter adjustment. The FED-5S / 5C exchanges that adjustment for a visible bright-line frame.

Lens Kits

The most common standard lens is the Industar-61 L/D 55mm f/2.8, an M39 rangefinder lens based on the four-element Tessar optical layout. Earlier or replacement examples may be offered with an Industar-26M, Industar-50, Jupiter-8 or another Soviet M39 lens.

The attached lens should be stored separately as listing or bundle metadata. A FED-5 body remains the same camera model regardless of which compatible M39 lens is attached.

Special and Commemorative Versions

FED-5 family cameras appear with several commemorative markings, including:

  • 1980 Moscow Olympic symbols
  • October Revolution anniversary logos
  • Soviet quality marks
  • Export nameplates
  • Different Cyrillic and Latin engraving styles
  • Black-on-silver and silver-on-black front plates

These should be stored as special-edition or variant metadata. They do not require separate main camera pages unless price tracking later shows a significant and consistent collector premium.

Relationship to FED-4

The FED-5 should be kept separate from the FED-4. Both cameras have selenium meters and slow-speed shutters, but the FED-5 has a redesigned body, exposure calculator and top-plate arrangement.

A practical identification rule is:

  • FED-4, older rounded meter housing and FED-4 body design
  • FED-5, later angular top plate and FED-5 engraving
  • FED-5V / 5B, FED-5 body without exposure meter
  • FED-5S / 5C, FED-5 body with bright-line finder

The cameras were manufactured in Kharkiv, in present-day Ukraine. Describing them only as Russian is common in seller listings, but historically and geographically incomplete.

Collector Notes

The ordinary FED-5 variants are generally affordable and have strongly overlapping market values. Combining the standard, 5V / 5B and 5S / 5C versions therefore gives cleaner price tracking than maintaining three separate camera pages.

The exact variant should still be saved as listing metadata. This allows separate price analysis later without fragmenting the public database.

  • Selenium meter response
  • Bright-line finder on the 5S / 5C

The shutter must be cocked before changing shutter speeds. This is one of the most important operating precautions for the FED-5 family.

The FED-5 should be treated as one combined M39 film-camera family, with FED-5, FED-5V / 5B and FED-5S / 5C stored as variants. Their shared mechanical platform and overlapping values make a combined page more useful than separate main entries.
