FED-4
The FED-4 is a Soviet 35mm rangefinder camera produced by the FED factory in Kharkiv, Ukraine, then part of the Soviet Union. Introduced in 1964, it developed the basic FED-3 design by adding a built-in selenium exposure meter while retaining the interchangeable M39 lens mount, mechanical shutter and combined rangefinder/viewfinder [1][2].
The camera uses a 39mm screw mount with the standard rangefinder register. It is commonly described in retail literature as Leica Thread Mount, L39 or M39. For database classification, the correct value is M39, following the distinction used for Soviet interchangeable-lens rangefinder cameras.
The M39 classification does not mean that the FED-4 uses the different register found on M39 Zenit SLR cameras. The FED-4 is an M39 rangefinder camera with an approximately 28.8mm flange focal distance. Many Leica screw-mount lenses can physically be used, but rangefinder calibration and production tolerances should be checked when combining Soviet cameras and lenses with equipment from other manufacturers.
The FED-4 has a combined optical viewfinder and coupled rangefinder. It does not display projected framelines, so the visible finder field is intended primarily for the standard lens. A colored central rangefinder patch is used to align the two images during focusing. The eyepiece includes approximately ±2 diopters of adjustment [1].
The horizontal-travel focal-plane shutter uses cloth curtains and provides speeds from 1 second to 1/500 second, plus Bulb. Shutter speeds should only be changed after the shutter has been cocked, as incorrect operation can damage the shutter-speed mechanism.
A built-in uncoupled selenium exposure meter is housed in the enlarged top cover. It requires no battery. The meter provides an exposure reading that must be transferred manually to the camera’s shutter-speed and lens-aperture controls.
History
Development from the FED-3
The FED-4 was introduced in 1964 as an updated version of the FED-3. Its primary technical addition was the built-in selenium exposure meter. The underlying shutter, M39 mount, removable back and relatively short-base rangefinder remained closely related to the FED-3 design [2][3].
Adding the meter required a considerably larger top housing. This gives the FED-4 its distinctive tall profile and makes it easy to distinguish from the lower, cleaner FED-2 and FED-3 bodies.
Production continued until approximately 1980. Specialist Soviet-camera references estimate total production across the principal versions at more than 633,000 cameras [3].
FED-4a and FED-4b
The FED-4 was produced in two main body configurations commonly identified by collectors as the FED-4a and FED-4b.
The early FED-4a uses a winding knob rather than a rapid advance lever. It resembles a FED-3 with an enlarged meter housing and is considerably less common than the later version.
The FED-4b uses a film advance lever and a redesigned, taller top housing. The meter calculator occupies the left side of the top plate, while the rewind control projects from the side of the camera. This later lever-wind form accounts for most surviving FED-4 cameras.
The suffixes a and b were not always prominently engraved on the cameras themselves. They are best treated as collector-recognized variants under the principal FED-4 entry.
FED-4K and FED-4L Names
Some references use FED-4K for the later lever-wind version. The Cyrillic designation relates to the rapid winding lever rather than indicating a fundamentally different camera system.
The designation FED-4L is also encountered in manuals, packaging and listings, usually in connection with cameras supplied with the lanthanum-glass Industar-61 L/D lens. These names should be retained as aliases or variant metadata rather than created as completely separate base models.
Exposure Meter
The defining feature of the FED-4 is its uncoupled selenium exposure meter. The photocell is positioned on the front of the meter housing, while the needle and exposure calculator are located on the top plate.
The photographer points the camera toward the subject, aligns the meter indicators and reads a suitable shutter-speed and aperture combination from the calculator. The selected settings must then be entered manually on the shutter and lens.
Because the meter uses a selenium cell, it requires no battery. However, many surviving meters have weakened or stopped responding after decades of exposure to light and age. A non-working meter is a condition issue, not a different camera version.
Shutter and Flash Synchronization
The FED-4 has a cloth focal-plane shutter with the following sequence:

The camera provides an X synchronization contact for electronic flash at 1/30 second. The accessory shoe is normally a cold shoe, with the flash connected through the separate synchronization socket [1][4].
The camera also includes a mechanical self-timer, described in the original manual as an automatic releaser. Depending on adjustment, it releases the shutter approximately 9 to 15 seconds after activation [1].
Dimensions and Weight
Published measurements vary according to whether the lens, leather case or protruding controls are included. Kamerastore lists the camera as approximately 141 × 91 × 40 mm and 660 g [5].
The original operating manual gives 1,000 g with the camera in its case. That number should not be used as the body-only database weight [1].
A measured body-only example has also been reported at approximately 630 g. For consistency, the main specification uses 660 g, while acknowledging that small differences can exist between knob-wind and lever-wind versions and between measuring methods.
Rangefinder and Viewfinder
The rangefinder base is commonly reported as approximately 41 to 43 mm, considerably shorter than the 67mm base of the FED-2. The shorter mechanism allowed room for the slow-speed and metering systems but provides lower focusing precision with very fast or longer focal-length lenses.
The combined finder has no selectable or projected framelines. External accessory finders are therefore appropriate when using wide-angle or telephoto lenses whose angle of view differs substantially from the standard lens.
Lens Kits
The FED-4 was commonly supplied with an Industar-61 52mm f/2.8 or later Industar-61 L/D 55mm f/2.8. Some examples are also encountered with the Industar-50.
The Industar-61 L/D uses lanthanum-containing optical glass and is one of the most familiar normal lenses associated with later FED rangefinder cameras.
The supplied lens should be treated as kit or listing metadata. A camera offered with a Jupiter, Industar or another M39 lens remains a FED-4 body unless the physical camera indicates another model.
Export and Commemorative Versions
The FED-4 was exported under several names. The best-known export version is the Revue 4, sold through Foto-Quelle in West Germany. Revue-branded cameras are technically part of the FED-4 family and should be connected to the same base model, with the export branding stored as variant metadata.
Commemorative examples were also produced, including cameras marking the anniversary of the October Revolution and versions carrying symbols associated with the 1980 Moscow Olympic Games.
These engravings and decorative variations do not change the underlying camera model. They should be stored as commemorative-edition or finish metadata.
Relationship to FED-3
The FED-4 should be kept separate from the FED-3. The FED-3 has a similar M39 mount, slow-speed shutter and short-base rangefinder, but it lacks the FED-4’s built-in selenium meter.
A practical identification rule is:
- FED-3, no exposure-meter housing
- FED-4, prominent selenium-meter housing on the top plate
Relationship to FED-5
The FED-5 followed the FED-4 and retained the built-in meter, M39 mount and slow-speed shutter. The FED-5 has a redesigned body and exists in several versions, including the FED-5B and FED-5C.
Seller listings sometimes confuse late FED-4 and early FED-5 cameras because both have large meter housings. The model engraving, rewind controls and body shape should be checked before confirming the connection.

The FED-4 is identified by its:
- FED or ФЭД-4 branding
- M39 interchangeable lens mount

Common listing names include FED-4, FED 4, ФЭД-4, FED-4a, FED-4b, FED-4K, FED-4L, Revue 4, Soviet M39 rangefinder and Russian Leica copy.
The camera was produced in Kharkiv, in present-day Ukraine. Describing it only as Russian is common in seller listings but geographically imprecise.
Collector Notes
The FED-4 is a common and affordable Soviet rangefinder, but early knob-wind bodies, unusual export branding and commemorative editions can be more collectible than ordinary lever-wind examples.
Buyers should check the cloth shutter curtains, slow-speed mechanism, rangefinder alignment, selenium meter response, self-timer, rewind controls, removable back, flash-sync socket and M39 lens mount.
The shutter must be cocked before changing speeds. Forcing the shutter-speed dial while the mechanism is not wound can damage the camera.
The FED-4 should be treated as a separate M39 film camera because its built-in selenium meter, Soviet M39 rangefinder mount, slow-speed shutter and distinct production variants separate it from the FED-3, FED-5 and Leica-standard LTM bodies.
