Kristall IIa

The Chinaglia Kristall IIa, usually engraved or catalogued as Kristall 2a, is an early Italian LTM coupled rangefinder introduced around 1950. Its Leica II-inspired layout combines separate viewing and rangefinder eyepieces, a focal-plane shutter from 1/20 to 1/1000 second plus B, and a Leica-compatible screw mount [1].

The model is especially associated with experimental use of stainless or nickel-plated steel bodywork. History

Development and Launch

Domenico Chinaglia developed the Kristall family in northern Italy during the postwar demand for domestically made Leica-style cameras. Auction research identifies the 2a as his first camera, with surviving regular examples dated around 1951 and broader collector histories placing its introduction around 1949 to 1950 [1][2].

Production Evolution

Early and regular bodies show differences in metal, engraving and flash synchronization. The later Kristall 2s is mechanically similar but has a 1/500-second top speed, while the 3s adds slow timed speeds. Those models should remain separate profiles rather than production variants of the IIa [1].

Special Variants

A documented pre-series of ten heavy nickel-plated bodies bears the misspelled staibryte marking instead of staybrite. Some examples also carry a small circled K2 mark. The proposed connection between K2 and the 1954 Italian mountaineering achievement is unverified [3][4]. These details are variants within the Standard model profile, not proof of a factory special edition.

Collector Notes

Check whether a camera is the ordinary 2a, a Staibryte pre-series body or a later 2s. Confirm the separate finder windows, LTM mount, shutter scale, sync socket, body material, logo spelling and serial. Observed numbers including 887, 955, 976 and 01219 do not establish a continuous allocation. Lenses by Steinar, Optical-Vegar and other suppliers should be recorded as outfit details [2][3].
