Wega IIa

The AFIOM Wega IIa is an Italian LTM coupled rangefinder introduced around 1952. It follows the Leica II operating concept with separate viewing and focusing eyepieces, bottom loading, a cloth focal-plane shutter and a Leica-compatible 39 mm screw mount, but its angular body ends and control details give it a distinct identity [1].

The shutter provides B and timed speeds from 1/20 to 1/1000 second, without the slow-speed range found on the later Wega IIIa. A front synchronization contact is present, but a reliable flash sync speed and finder magnification have not been established [1].

History

Development and Launch

AFIOM, based in Pordenone, developed the Wega family in the early 1950s. The IIa added a coupled rangefinder to the simpler Wega body around 1952, and the line was shown at the Milan Fair in 1953. Surviving auction examples are commonly dated 1952 [1][2].

Production Evolution

Early cameras carry the AFIOM logo, while later examples can carry the CD mark associated with Domenico Chinaglia. The latest form was also sold as Wega 2a. Collector estimates divide production among approximately 1,000 to 1,300 AFIOM IIa bodies, 200 to 300 CD-marked IIa bodies and 300 to 500 Wega 2a bodies, but these are not surviving factory totals [3].

Special Variants

AFIOM and CD logos, the IIa or 2a spelling, lens packages and small control changes belong in variant metadata. They do not turn the generic Wega IIa into a special edition, and the database tag remains Standard model [2][3].

Collector Notes

Distinguish the IIa from the scale-focusing Wega I and from the Wega IIIa, which has revised shutter controls and a slow-speed or variable-delay arrangement. Verify the LTM thread, rangefinder cam, front sync contact, top engraving and serial format. Reported serials such as 31976, 40211 and 404210 demonstrate that a simple continuous range should not be inferred [2][4].
