About this lens
Dallmeyer Dallac 85mm f/2
The Dallac is a fast British short telephoto made in an original rangefinder-coupled Leica screw mount. Its six-element design, f/2 aperture and substantial black-chrome barrel make it a distinctive portrait lens of the 1940s.
Optical qualities
Rendering
The Dallac uses six elements and is commonly described as a double-Gauss design. At full aperture it offers the shallow depth of field expected from an 85mm f/2 lens. Actual contrast, flare and edge performance depend strongly on coating and internal condition.
Handling
The native coupled M39 focusing mount reaches approximately 4 feet, or 1.22 metres. Surviving specification references list an E49 filter fitting. The long focusing throw and large aperture suit deliberate rangefinder portrait work.
History
Development and Launch
Documented Leica screw-mount examples date from the 1940s. The lens was produced by J. H. Dallmeyer as an original coupled rangefinder optic rather than as a later adaptation.
Production Evolution
Black-chrome and chrome external treatments are documented. These finish differences do not establish separate optical profiles.
Special Editions/Variants
Military-marked examples are known, but service markings are provenance variations rather than a different optical model.
Collector Notes
Original M39 coupling, correct Dallac engraving and an intact aperture control are important identifiers. Optical condition deserves careful inspection because cleaning marks and haze are common concerns on surviving lenses.
