Rodenstock is a German optical manufacturer founded by Josef Rodenstock and his brother Michael in Würzburg. The company became an important producer of ophthalmic optics, photographic lenses, and precision optical equipment. Its camera-lens history includes enlarging, large-format, medium-format, and 35mm optics. For Leica rangefinder users, the Rodenstock Heligon-A 35mm f/2.8 is a notable postwar LTM wide-angle lens that combines German optical manufacturing with Leica screw-mount compatibility.

History

Founding / Early Years

The Rodenstock brothers established an optical and precision-mechanical workshop in 1877. The business moved to Munich during the 1880s and expanded its production of spectacles, lenses, and instruments. Photographic optics became an increasingly important part of the catalogue as industrial lens manufacture developed around the turn of the twentieth century.

Market Entry

Rodenstock supplied camera manufacturers and marketed lenses under names including Eurynar, Ysarex, Heligon, Eurygon, Rotelar, and Imagon. During the postwar period it produced lenses for several camera systems, including Kodak Retina equipment. The Heligon-A 35mm f/2.8 appeared in Leica M39 screw mount around the early 1950s, with surviving examples documented as rangefinder-coupled lenses for 35mm Leica-style cameras.

Expansion / Modern Period

Rodenstock developed major professional lens families for enlarging and large-format photography, including Rodagon, Grandagon, Apo-Ronar, and Sironar. In 1996 its precision-optics activities were separated from the eyewear business. The operation subsequently became part of Linos, Qioptiq, and then Excelitas Technologies. Rodenstock photographic optics continue within this industrial lineage, although the historical rangefinder lenses belong to an earlier manufacturing period.
