Voigtländer Nickel Heliar 50mm f/2

The Nickel Heliar 50mm f/2 stands apart from the rest of Cosina's Voigtländer line through its finish: rather than the usual black or chrome, its barrel is nickel-plated, a deliberate nod to the look of early Voigtländer rangefinder lenses [1][2]. It revives the Heliar name and a compact 50mm normal optic in a form aimed squarely at collectors and at photographers drawn to a classic-looking lens for screw-mount and Leica M bodies.

Optically the lens uses a five-element, three-group arrangement, the layout associated with the Heliar design, and a fast f/2 maximum aperture [2]. The barrel is short and light, with an eleven-blade diaphragm that keeps the aperture opening close to circular, and focusing runs down to one metre with a rangefinder-coupled helicoid and an infinity lock typical of the screw-mount Voigtländer normals [2]. As supplied the lens carries an M39 Leica thread mount for direct use on early rangefinder bodies, and an M39-to-Leica-M adapter was included so it could be used on M cameras as well [1]. Because it is rangefinder coupled, it focuses through the camera's rangefinder mechanism on both screw-mount and M bodies.

The optics are shared with the earlier Heliar Classic 50mm f/2, which Cosina produced in 2006 in chrome and black versions tied to its Voigtländer 250th-anniversary R2M and R3M camera sets [3]. In 2009 the same optical formula was reused for the rigid nickel Leica screw-mount Heliar, which was issued as a limited edition: B&H records it as a run of 600 numbered lenses produced to mark the tenth anniversary of the Cosina-Voigtländer collaboration together with Cosina's fiftieth anniversary, presented in a commemorative double-box set [1][3]. Surviving examples in the trade carry serial numbers prefixed with a letter, for instance the E and H series listed by dealers, which helps confirm provenance [1].

Optical qualities

Rendering Documentation of this exact lens is limited, and most published impressions cover the optically identical Heliar Classic and the f/3.5 Heliar. Reviewers describe the Heliar family as combining good sharpness with a gentle, slightly vintage drawing style rather than clinical modern contrast [2][3]. The five-element design and rounded eleven-blade aperture are credited with smooth out-of-focus rendering, and the f/2 Heliar is sometimes recommended to photographers who value three-dimensional rendering over outright resolution [2]. Performance claims beyond this should be treated cautiously given how little is written about the nickel edition specifically.

History

Development and Launch Cosina built the lens around an existing Heliar optic. The 2006 Heliar Classic 50mm f/2 was made in chrome and black for the 250th-anniversary R2M and R3M sets, with reported runs of about 800 chrome and 1700 black examples [3]. The nickel screw-mount version followed in 2009, reusing that glass in a rigid barrel with the distinctive plated finish [3].

Special editions The nickel Heliar is itself the special edition. It was a commemorative limited release of 600 units honouring the Cosina-Voigtländer partnership and Cosina's company anniversary, sold in a dedicated presentation set and bundled with an M-mount adapter [1].

Collector Notes Buyers should confirm the lens is the nickel screw-mount edition rather than the more common black or chrome Heliar Classic, and check for the serial-number prefix and, where possible, the original double box, hood, caps and the M39-to-M adapter, since completeness affects value [1]. The plated finish should be inspected for wear, and as with any older rangefinder optic the elements are worth checking for haze before purchase.
