Zuiho

Zuiho was a Japanese camera and optical-equipment company associated with the Honor line of 35mm rangefinder cameras. Established in Tokyo as Zuiho Kogaku Seiki, it initially marketed cameras linked with Mejiro Kogaku and later appears to have taken a more direct role in their production. Honor cameras and lenses, including the Honor 50mm f/2, used the Leica M39 screw mount and belong to the postwar Japanese Leica-copy tradition.

History

Founding / Early Years

Zuiho Kogaku Seiki was established in 1956. Early Honor cameras were manufactured in association with Mejiro Kogaku, while Zuiho handled distribution or marketing. Period references initially identify Mejiro and later identify Zuiho, suggesting that Zuiho absorbed, merged with, or otherwise succeeded the earlier camera operation by the late 1950s. The precise legal transaction is not fully documented.

Market Entry

The Honor 35 and Honor S1 appeared in 1956 as Leica-inspired 35mm rangefinder cameras. They used interchangeable Leica-thread lenses and a coupled rangefinder. Standard-lens options included collapsible Konishiroku Hexar 50mm f/3.5 and faster lenses carrying Hexanon or Honor names. The Honor 50mm f/2 is documented as an LTM standard lens associated with the later camera line.

Expansion / Modern Period

Zuiho continued the Honor series through models such as the Honor SL, introduced for export around 1959. Camera production was comparatively brief and did not develop into a long-running mass-market system. Sources indicate that the business continued with binoculars or other optical instruments after Honor camera production, but a definitive closure date and complete successor history are not available.

Product Lines

Honor Rangefinder Cameras

The Honor 35, S1, and SL are the principal Leica-style cameras associated with Mejiro and Zuiho.

LTM Standard Lenses

Honor cameras were sold with 50mm lenses carrying Hexar, Hexanon, and Honor markings. Individual optical-manufacturer attribution varies and should be based on the precise engraving and documented model.

Optical Instruments

Zuiho is also associated with binoculars and other optical products beyond its short-lived camera range.

Market Reception

Honor cameras and Zuiho lenses are uncommon but recognized examples of Japan's 1950s rangefinder industry. Collectors value their Leica-compatible construction, limited production, and complex Mejiro-Zuiho history. The use of lenses from multiple suppliers makes exact identification especially important. Zuiho's standing is therefore based more on historical rarity and system context than on a large independent catalogue of M-mount lenses or modern photography equipment.
