The Leica M10-R ("R" for Resolution) represents the pinnacle of image quality within the M10 generation. Released in July 2020, it answers the demand for higher megapixel counts without sacrificing the low-light performance or compact ergonomics that defined the M10 series. At its heart lies a 40-megapixel CMOS sensor, a significant jump from the 24MP sensor found in the M10 and M10-P. This sensor is not merely a resolution boost; it features a new pixel architecture that provides a wider dynamic range and reduced image noise, even at high ISOs.
Despite the massive increase in resolution, the M10-R retains the ultra-quiet shutter mechanism first introduced in the M10-P. This makes it an incredibly versatile tool, capable of capturing landscape-level detail in complete silence. The camera also inherits the touchscreen interface and the classic aesthetic of the M10-P, available in black chrome and silver chrome finishes.
Crucially, the M10-R solves the "resolution vs. sensitivity" trade-off. Typically, higher pixel counts lead to more noise, but the M10-R's sensor boasts an impressive 16-minute maximum exposure time at ISO 100, allowing for long-exposure photography that was previously impossible on digital M cameras. It captures 14-bit DNG files that offer immense flexibility in post-processing, allowing photographers to crop significantly while maintaining print-quality sharpness.
History
The M10-R was the final major release in the M10 lifecycle, effectively serving as the bridge to the M11.
The Resolution Leap (2020) Launched in 2020, the M10-R was developed to maximize the potential of modern Leica M-lenses. Optical masterpieces like the APO-Summicron-M 50mm f/2 ASPH are capable of resolving detail far beyond what a 24MP sensor can capture. The M10-R unlocked this potential. Unlike the M10 Monochrom, which also had 40MP but only in black and white, the M10-R brought this level of definition to color photography [1].
Sensor Technology The sensor in the M10-R is unique to this model (and the M10 Monochrom). It is a standard Bayer pattern sensor but lacks an optical low-pass filter to ensure maximum sharpness. Reviews noted that despite the smaller pixels, the M10-R actually performed better in low light than the 24MP M10, thanks to improved quantum efficiency and microlens design [2].
Legacy The M10-R is often considered the "sweet spot" for many users who want high resolution but prefer the traditional bottom-plate design and controls of the M10 era over the modernized M11. It remains a benchmark for image quality in the rangefinder world.
