The Leica M10-P is the "Professional" variant of the acclaimed M10 system, designed specifically for photographers who require absolute discretion. Released in August 2018, it retains the slim body and 24-megapixel full-frame sensor of the standard M10 but introduces significant haptic and mechanical upgrades. The most notable engineering achievement is the redesigned shutter mechanism. It is virtually inaudible, making it quieter than even the cloth shutters of the vintage analog M cameras. This allows street and documentary photographers to work unnoticed in silent environments like courtrooms or theaters.
Visually, the M10-P embraces a minimalist aesthetic. The bright red Leica dot has been removed from the front of the camera to avoid drawing attention. Instead, the top plate features a classic Leica script engraving, reminiscent of the M3 and M4 eras. The "P" designation follows the tradition set by the M4-P and M9-P, signaling a tool built for rugged, unobtrusive daily use.
Technologically, the M10-P was the first Leica M to introduce a touchscreen LCD. This enables photographers to swipe through images during playback, pinch-to-zoom for focus checking, and tap to move the magnified view in Live View mode. It also includes an integrated electronic level gauge (spirit level), which helps in aligning architectural shots and landscapes perfectly, a feature missing from the standard M10.
History
The M10-P was developed in response to feedback from professional users of the original M10 who loved the image quality but found the shutter sound too sharp and the lack of touch controls outdated.
The Stealth Update (2018) Launched roughly 18 months after the original M10, the M10-P did not increase resolution or dynamic range, as it shared the same sensor and Maestro II processor. Instead, Leica focused entirely on the shooting experience. The dampening of the shutter was a complex engineering challenge, as it had to remain reliable at high speeds (1/4000s) while eliminating the high-pitched mechanical "clack" of previous digital models [1].
Touchscreen Integration The addition of the touchscreen was a controversial move for a brand focused on "Das Wesentliche" (The Essentials). However, Leica implemented it conservatively. The touch functions are limited to playback and Live View focus aids; there are no touch-based menus to accidentally trigger while shooting. This balance maintained the camera's tactile purity while adding modern convenience [2].
Legacy The M10-P is often cited as the "perfected" M10. While the later M10-R offered higher resolution (40MP), many street photographers prefer the 24MP files of the M10-P for their manageability and the camera's superior stealth characteristics. It remains one of the most desirable bodies for reportage photography in the digital age.
