Yashica YE

The Yashica YE is a 35mm Leica screw-mount rangefinder camera released by Yashica Co., Ltd. in 1959. It was one of Yashica’s first interchangeable-lens 35mm rangefinders and was closely connected to the company’s acquisition of Nicca’s rangefinder camera technology [1][2].

The camera uses the Leica Thread Mount, also known as LTM, M39 or Leica screw mount. It accepts Yashica screw-mount lenses as well as many Leica-compatible L39 lenses, making it directly relevant to LeicaLensList’s rangefinder camera scope [1][3].

The YE is also known in period and collector references as the Yashica 35 YE or Yashica 35 E type. These names should be stored as aliases or search terms, while Yashica YE should remain the main database name [1].

The camera was derived from late Nicca screw-mount designs. Leica Copies Japan describes the YE as taking the Nicca 3-F lever-wind body concept and combining it with a more modern shutter-speed progression. Mike Eckman’s history of the Yashica YF also notes that the Yashica YE was the first of two Nicca-derived Yashica cameras released in 1959 and describes it as a rebadged amalgam of Nicca models [1][2].

The YE has separate viewfinder and rangefinder windows, rather than the later projected-frame finder used by more advanced Japanese LTM cameras. It has a Leica-style front slow-speed dial, a top shutter-speed dial, bottom loading and a traditional screw-mount body layout. The standard shutter-speed range is B, 1/2, 1/4, 1/8, 1/15, 1/30, 1/60, 1/125, 1/250 and 1/500 second, with 1/30 second X-sync [1].

History

Development and Launch

The Yashica YE appeared shortly after Yashica took control of Nicca’s rangefinder camera assets. This gave Yashica a fast route into the 35mm interchangeable-lens camera market without having to design an entirely new focal-plane shutter rangefinder from scratch [2].

There is some disagreement about the exact launch month. Leica Copies Japan notes that Japanese sources have claimed January or March 1959, while serial-number evidence suggests production began in December 1958 in preparation for 1959 sales. For LeicaLensList, 1959 is the safest release year [1].

Production Evolution

Leica Copies Japan argues that YE production likely ran from December 1958 until June 1959, although the camera continued to appear in Japanese brochures into 1960. This distinction matters because sales literature can make the model appear longer-lived than the actual production run [1].

Serial Number Notes

Serial-number information should be handled carefully because Yashica used a date-code style system rather than a simple continuous factory range. Leica Copies Japan records found YE body numbers beginning around 12804x, with production sequences through 19000x, 29xxxx, 39xxxx, 49xxxx, 59xxxx, 69xxxx and a few unusual 70000x to 70011x examples [1].

For LeicaLensList, the safest database wording is found examples from approximately 12804x to 70011x, date-code based range, not an official published factory range.

Relationship to Nicca

The Yashica YE should be understood as part of the late Nicca lineage, but it should not be entered under Nicca. The body and mechanism are strongly Nicca-derived, but the camera is branded and marketed as Yashica, and all visible branding on the YE is Yashica [1][2].

Relationship to Yashica YF

The Yashica YE should be kept separate from the Yashica YF. The YF was a more distinctive later model, with different styling, a more advanced finder system and a 1/1000 second top shutter speed. The YE is closer to the Leica III-style Nicca pattern, with separate finder and rangefinder windows and a 1/500 second top speed [1][2].

Titanium Shutter Examples

Listings sometimes describe a Yashica YE as having a titanium shutter. This should be treated as a repair, service or modification detail unless factory documentation proves otherwise. The normal Yashica YE database entry should not use “Titanium Shutter” as part of the main model name.

For ad matching, listings titled Yashica YE with Titanium Shutter, Yashica YE M39, Yashica YE LTM or Yashica 35 YE should all link to the same Yashica YE camera entry.

Collector Notes

The Yashica YE is an interesting collector camera because it sits at the transition point between Nicca’s Leica-copy heritage and Yashica’s later mainstream 35mm camera business. It is less famous than the Yashica YF, but historically important as Yashica’s first interchangeable-lens 35mm rangefinder.

Collectors should check the LTM lens mount, separate finder and rangefinder windows, front slow-speed dial, top shutter-speed dial, Yashica top-plate branding, body serial number, rangefinder alignment and shutter curtain condition. Because many examples are over sixty years old, serviced examples may contain replacement shutter curtains or other internal repairs.

For LeicaLensList, the Yashica YE should be stored as a separate LTM camera entry. It belongs in the database because it is a Leica-compatible screw-mount rangefinder and an important Yashica/Nicca transitional model.
